"You know where I'm coming from, right?" I asked him desperately. I wanted--needed--for him to know where my heart was at, but my mouth just couldn't supply the words.

"Niall," I begged for him to look at me. "Niall, baby... I love you--"

"Then why are you doing this?" He managed to choke out, breathing raggedly. "You say you love me but now you're trying to get rid of me? Tell me how that even makes sense, Cassie!"

"It's the only way!" I exploded at him. His eyes dropped again, staring at a shell imbedded in the sand. Instantly, I regretted my lapse in patience and the tears brimmed over.

"It's the only way..." I tried to say again as a sob wracked my body. "I can't keep doing this. Not now, not when there's so much going on in our lives."

"Cassie..." Niall tried, sitting up and reaching over for my hand. If he touched me, he would just change my mind. Then we would be back to square one, only for this to happen again.

"No, Niall. I can't..." I said pulling away. "Things aren't like what they used to be. Simple and easy. Things have changed."

"So that's it?" he asked, his throat sounding as constricted as mine felt. "After... everything? "

I brought myself to meet his blue eyes and my heart felt like it was being squeezed smaller and smaller in the fists of harsh reality.

Could I really bring myself to let Niall go?
