01 - Daniel

I hate summer. I hate sweating. I hate sitting in the blistering heat of my 8th period math class. I never miss the feeling of the summer season. I dread every time of year it comes around. The only thing even remotely good about summer is getting a three month break from school.

I don't know why the school decided it would be okay to turn off the air conditioning on the last day of school. I had all but passed out the last 7 class periods. I was really starting to think that the undone math work on my desk would be the last thing I saw before I died of a heatstroke. A guy in my 5th period class had even gone as far as taking off his shirt but the teacher made him put it back on.

Atlas, the piercing sound of the bell rung throughout the building. As dramatic as it sounds, I was practically jumping out of my seat, ecstatic that I could finally leave this place for about three months. As much as I hate summer, it doesn't compare to school. I wanted nothing more than to leave.

As I walked out of the classroom, I heard a loud booming voice from behind me all the way down the hallway,

"It's hot as hell in here!" I recognized it instantly. Xander.

I sped up my steps before my brother could notice me and embarrass me. He seemed to like doing that. Unfortunately, due to his very good spotting eyes (damn you, baseball), he saw me.

"There's my favorite brother! C'mere Danny, you trying to run from me?" Listen, I love my brother. But sometimes I want nothing more than to clock him in the face. Not that it would do much damage.

I stopped walking and made the mistake of looking back behind me.

I was met by Xander giving me a bone crushing hug. Clearly he was much more excited for summer break than I was.

"Xander, stop it right now," I could feel my face going bloodshot red out of embarrassment. People were starting to stare at Xander's obnoxious behavior.

"Are you embarrassed, my dearest brother Daniel?" He sang. I managed to get out of his arms and ran out the rest of the way to the parking lot and into the passenger seat of our shared car. Although we shared the car, I wasn't necessarily supposed to drive it because I got my license suspended for a little while for too many speeding tickets. Let's just say I'm not the safest driver in the world.

I heard the back doors of the car open and looked behind me to see Rainey, Casper, and Camila sliding into the backseat. About 5 minutes later, Xander exited the school building. He had probably taken longer that us so that he could get his updated game schedule from his baseball coach.

"We heading to your house, Xander?" Casper questioned.

Rainey rolled her eyes, "Where else would we go? They have the best hangout house. No parents home, a pool, and lots of food!"

Casper and Rainey have been our friends for as long as I could remember (being third grade). They used to get on my nerves quite a bit, but I've grown used to it. Then again, I guess it doesn't take much to get on my nerves. Casper and Rainey have been around me almost as much as my brother has, so in a way, they kind of feel like siblings to me. Very annoying siblings, at that.

Camila stuck her head up between the front seats, "Can we stop at McDonalds?" She asked this every car ride home from school. Xander pushed her head back with his hand while still looking at the road. He didn't even have to say anything for her to know that it was a no. She fell back onto her seat and crossed her arms with a pout.
