Alkina
Outside was raining. Like everyday during this month. I glance at the clock on the wall. 10:30. I have time for a shower before my classes at 12.
My parents said that I didn't need to attend university because it wasn't necessary. They could afford private lessons, for every degree I wanted to study. I didn't have a chance to say no. I couldn't, because I know why. My parents did their best for a quiet life for me, to create this normal bubble here in Bradford, but I know where I come from. I know what my dad does, or at least did. My own last name is proof of that. The fact that our house is guarded every second too.
Anyway, I get up and head for the bathroom. I take a glance at myself at the mirror. I like my hair today, so I decide not to wash it. My hair is brown, long with small waves. I straighten it most of the days though. Even though I love my original hair, on my eighteenth birthday, I decided for blonde highlights which I got rid of a month later. I prefer it brown better.
I took a quick shower and got dressed in black leather pants and a white crop, with long sleeves and a cut on the back, which my hair covers. I put the books I need for today in my bag, and do my make up. I prefer it simple when I go to my classes so I dont bother with eyeliner. I quickly wear my snickers and put on my leather jacket before going downstairs. I pass the kitchen where our house keeper Dolores makes wonders. She was my nanny and one of the people I appreciate most in my life. I love her.
I find my mom sitting on the couch, on our living room reading on her iPad while my dad is near the big window on his phone. Typical.
"Goodmorning mom. Morning dad."
My mom is a stunning woman. I've always been told I look just like her and it's so true. Always dressed up and so put together. Just by the bun on her head you can tell she loves perfection.
"Morning sweetheart. How did you sleep?" She closes her iPad and smiles up at me. I get down and put a kiss on her cheek.
"Good, I have classes till 3pm and then I think I'm going out with John."
John is my bestfriend. We attend classes together and we plan on opening our own lawyer office after we get our degrees.
"That's good Alkina but please don't be late tonight!"
"I won't, I swear." I made sure I crossed my fingers behind my back because it's a lie of course. I want to go to that new club who opened a week ago. John told me that we would come home before midnight though.
"We have guests tonight!" My dad told me without taking his eyes from his phone.
I've always had a great relationship with my father and for that I'm grateful. I've seen how John's dad is never home and even when he comes around he doesn't even throws a glance at his son. My blood boils whenever I think about that man. He doesn't deserve his beautiful wife and his amazing son.
Which I remembered, Violet's birthday is coming up, John's mother. I need to think of a present and of course, a bouquet of tulips. I give them to her every year because I know she loves them."Don't even think about coming late for dinner tonight Alkina. We mean it." By the tone he is using, I know that. He only speaks in that voice when something serious is up.
"I won't." And I mean it. I can see this is getting serious. "But who's coming?" I say confused. Confused because we never have guests over. Except for John and his mom, when my mother invites her for dinner sometimes.
My dad turned around and looked at my mom, and she did the same. Oh, I don't like this one bit.
And with the response my dad gives, my stomach tightness so much I forget to breathe.
"Your unle, Lorenzo."
