Five Years Ago:
On a island somewhere up north in the archipelago was a tribe of people who aren't like any typical Vikings. They study and sale dragons for the highest coins. But there lived a beautiful and capable young woman who was making sure that her smart seven year old son named Arvid and her curious five year old daughter named Dawn were keeping them close to their tent from the Deadly Nadder that was being wrestled into a fireproof cage.
But the Deadly Nadder kept roaring out fire as it set the nearby plants on fire and swung its tail that has sent its spines flying into the air. Luck was not on the Dragon Hunters' sides as the Deadly Nadder's spines had jammed the locks on the other cages and the other dragons has been sent free from their cages. Dawn whimpered softly at the terrifying sight of the freed dragons, but she perked up when something in the air had changed.
At that moment, huge shadows of the dragons had started flying from the dark thunderclouds and above the sea. Another raid was starting, Dawn hid in the shadows of the tent as her brother helped their father. She dodged the falling fireballs as well as the massive, winged reptiles who had started fighting against the Vikings over their food.
Loud, terrifying roars had echoed across the sky as fire had came flying onto the land. The dark sky seemed to come to life with falling fires that had caused more and more destruction. Dawn yelped and dodged an angry green Deadly Nadder as it charged towards another Dragon Hunter and started fighting him over a barrel of fish.
Many of the Vikings had struggled to keep the food sources by fighting the dragons. A good deal of the Dragon Hunters had started protecting their kinsmen and children. The teens had started to help out by gathering whatever food was left behind and splashing water over the spreading fires.
Dawn had started dodging from the fighting Dragon Hunters and the dragons who had started fighting with their fire. The smell of smoke and burning wood had filled her nose as she ran. Dawn ran towards a silvery lake, in hopes that the dragons won't see her. But Dawn had accidentally caught the attention of a red Changewing, who seemed more angry than the other dragons.
"Help!" cried out Dawn.
The Changewing started to make Dawn walk backwards in the house and she soon tripped over a rock. It was about to open its mouth to spat out its hot green acid at her. Dawn covered her eyes, bracing herself to not see herself get killed by the Changewing. But when Dawn uncovered her eyes, she felt herself gapped in shock when she saw another dragon glaring at the Changewing and scared the acid-spitting dragon away from her.
Dawn's breath was jumbled in her chest and her heart was racing fearfully, while her fighting instincts seemed to have left Dawn. The dragon sat down and lowered her head to look at Dawn. The Monstrous Nightmare's pupils had became completely round, and he looked at Dawn with a open, friendly and interested gaze.
But the Monstrous Nightmare walked closer to her. Dawn felt herself shivering in fear as the Monstrous Nightmare made her stopped at a the wall, making her heart racing even more.
The Monstrous Nightmare has blue scales with mixed hints of red, green, and yellow like buried jewels. His eyes are bright and yellow as topazes. His claws flexed against the grass and his black stripes gleamed shamelessly against his scales.
His fearsome beauty as well as her terrifying nature made Dawn feel intimidated even more, but she took a deep breath to calm her nerves and looked up to meet the fierce Monstrous Nightmare's eyes. His eyes are in the rich shade of yellow, almost like topazes. The two of them both met each other's eyes. Emotions rolled around inside Dawn like a firestorm. She don't know whether to feel scared or horrified or stunned or amazed. Feelings like lightning raced between them: fear, anger, curiosity, and awe.
As they continued looking into each other's eyes, a reflection of their souls is being reflected back from the other's eyes. Dawn felt her breath caught in her throat when she looked at the rare dragon. But she remembered what happened to Hiccup's mother, Valka Haddock. Perhaps, maybe, there's more to Valka's story than it first meets the eye of some things.
But their silent connection was interrupted when Viggo's axe had suddenly spun through the air between them, barely missing the Monstrous Nightmare and planting into a pillar.
"Run Dawn!" cried out Dad.
The Monstrous Nightmare had suddenly whirled around blasts fire at him, he managed to get out of the way of the scorching flames. Dawn yelped and jumped out of the way of the falling debris as the Monstrous Nightmare has set the whole place up in flames. Dawn dodged the flapping wings, the flashing claws, the ablaze fire, and the swinging tail.
Dawn grabbed hold of the Monstrous Nightmare's fiery wing, making the dragon looked at her more calmly. Dawn gritted in pain as she felt the burn on her hand.
"No, don't!" Dawn said fearfully.
The Monstrous Nightmare locked eyes with Dawn again, but there was unspeakable agitation in both of their eyes as they looked at each other.
"Hold on!" Viggo was taking on another dragon, a huge dark blue Dramillion with red spots and light blue scars that littered his body, who was blocking the way for Viggo to enter.
"No! Dad!" Dawn cried out in fear as the Monstrous had placed its jaws on the back of Dawn's clothes and flew away through the aflame forest. Dawn coughed out the smoke from her throat. She looked down and saw the Dramillion that was fighting her dad following her and the Monstrous Nightmare.
"DAWN!!!" Dawn swallowed the lump when she heard her dad's furious and heartbroken yell.
"DAD!!!" yelled Dawn, tears started running down her face at full force and the wind whipped through her blonde hair as she watched as the Island of the Dragon Hunters had started fade from view in the talons of the Monstrous Nightmare.
⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡Back on Dragon Hunter Island:
Once the dragon raid had finally cleared out, word about the fate of Viggo's daughter had spread throughout the village. The mood has become increasingly somber and heavy grief. A large amount of the Dragon Hunters stared in sorrow as the listing, battered ship is pushed into the still sea and Lars offered his rites.
"May the Valkyries offer gentle hands to guide you to Odin's great kingdom." Lars took a deep breath and tried to keep his grief at bay as he spoke the rites. "May they sing your name with love and tenderness, so that we might hear it carried upon Valhalla's light from above, and know that you've come home to caring arms."
Arvid and the other teens watched on with tears in their eyes. He stood in between his father, his mother, Ryker, Lars, Uncle Oswald, and Dagur. He was clutching a bow in his hand with an arrow on its bow string. Arvid watched on with a heartbroken expression and was struggling to wipe off his tears that kept spilling from his eyes.
"Here we now stand, to honor a life taken before it had even begun: That of a friend. A sister. A daughter. A Viking... A Shieldmaiden." Lars' words had almost made Arvid start crying again, but he swallowed back his sob.
They each raised their arrows with feathers that was set aflame towards vessel, the arrows flew towards the ship and burn away at the vessel, Viggo fell to his knees and started sobbing. He was quietly comforted by his wife. The sight of the chief of the Dragon Hunters breaking down reduces everyone else to tears.
