DoveHis parents, like him, were very nice people. But when they saw a random Black girl stepping outside of their son's truck they acted very shocked which in turn made Dove worry that they didn't like Black people or something, but thankfully that hadn't been the case at all.
Joan was his mother's name. She was blonde, so sweet, and looked very physically strong for her age. His father looked older than his wife by maybe a decade or two. Despite that though, he still looked strong as hell. Probably from the fact that they both worked on a farm all their lives. Unlike his mom though, the father's hair and beard were grey, and he seemed to be much more reserved and less talkative than her.
Aside from Caleb, they had three other sons. Only one of them was around at the moment, Henry, the youngest of the four.
Henry was, unfortunately for Dove though, very straightforward about everything. And he didn't hold back from asking her questions about her personal relationship with his third oldest brother.
"How did that loser land himself a girl like you?" He asked Dove right after she sat down at the dining table next to him. The rest of the family was standing in different parts of the large kitchen doing various different things.
Caleb sighed very deeply and closed his eyes like he was exhausted, and as if the question itself had sucked the very life and soul completely out of his body.
"We are not dating. She's a close friend from out of town." He explained, leaning against the arch entry of the kitchen, with his arms folded, and her suitcase and other stuff placed on the floor beside him. "But you've never talked about her before today?"
"When do I ever talk to you about anything?"
"Caleb." His mother scolded.
"No mom, he's right," Henry said.
"That's mean," Dove laughed, and turned to face Caleb, only to find that he was already looking straight at her, and smiling too. "Oh, he can get way worse than that," the little boy said to her, and Caleb exhaled again. His parents gave Dove permission to stay over without very little convincing on any of their parts. His mother actually looked very happy about it too. She gave him a kiss on his cheek, and he side hugged her the way kids do when they want to get all the affectionate parent-kid moment over with.
Caleb gestured with his head for Dove to get up and follow him. She did. "Come on dude, don't take her away yet," Henry fake complained, and Dove laughed. She didn't try to get in between their bickering because she couldn't tell if it was actually real or if that was just how they were as siblings.
"She isn't going anywhere, I'm just showing her around the place, also do you have any friends your own age to hang out with?"
"I don't know Caleb, do you?" Henry clapped back. Caleb's brows furrowed and his eyes squinted as well from annoyance at the young boy.He said her name very sternly, reminding her to come. Then he grabbed her by the wrist once she was finally in arms reach and pulled her out of the kitchen. Dove followed steadily behind him while he took her upstairs, along with her luggage. Liking the way his hand felt wrapped around her small wrist very much.
Caleb
Once he showed her all the important rooms in the house and the one she would be sleeping in, he wanted to try and help her unpack all of her stuff. She said it was fine, but he still wanted to help because he had nothing better to do, but hang out with her. Dove still insisted on doing it by herself, so he dropped the offer and told her to find him outside when she was done.
Being around her gave him butterflies. He felt like a twelve year old boy. And he hated being twelve, and twelve year old boys even more. He kept waiting for the moment where the butterflies would go away so they could actually talk to each other the way they normally did.
She was acting exactly like herself, but he wasn't, and he really really hated that.
When he came downstairs, he overheard his evil twerp little twelve year old brother and his parents talking about Dove and him. There they go again. He sighed in exacerbation. "I think they're secretly dating,"
"Caleb wouldn't try to keep it a secret. He knows we don't disapprove. He's an adult now, anyway. And he can date whoever he wants to. Just as long as nobody get's pregnant and all." His mother said.
"Maybe she's an escort or something?" He asked. "Now, how the hell do you know what an escort is?" his old man said stopping his scroll on his archaic phone to look at Henry. Henry shrugged. "There's no way. It's not realistic. She's like so out of his league,"
"No she's not. Caleb's a handsome boy too,"
"Pffft,"
Their mother ignored him and continued.
"I think they would make a beautiful couple. Even more beautiful babies."Oh my god, what was wrong with these people?
"Could y'all please stop gossiping about my personal life?" Caleb begged. Everybody went quiet. He went to look for something in the refrigerator.
"I told you she's just a friend." He said then closed the refrigerator's door, hard, when he found something to drink. He drank the bottle of water, then set the rest down on the counter. "Don't make it weird for her, please." He said to them before walking out of the house.
