Savannah entered her home with a smile as her mother was once again waiting. The mother once again couldn't leave the door. If she was being frank, she hated it. She hated that her daughter; her only one, was putting herself in such danger for a boy. A boy that didn't even bother to walk her home.
The mother pushed down these thoughts and spoke softly. " I see you did what I told you too. " The mother couldn't look at her daughter, so she looked at the television instead. It was a small one and it was on the news. Whatever are they covering? Only the little girl who showed up in an ally that the Piped Piper took.
" Yes, mother. I made sure to arrive back on time. May I ask you a question? " Savannah couldn't wait until dinner, she needed to know. For her sake and Peter's. Her mother sighed and said. " If you must. "
Her mother had gotten a feeling about what she was going to ask. After all. her daughter wasn't dull. Savannah paused and said. " Why are we visiting aunt Rachel? " It was a reasonable question. They only go to her aunt's house on thanksgiving. Her mother looked down and said. " I believe you predicted it out by now. " That was all of the answers she needed.
Savannah balled her fists as she felt her blood boiling. " But, mother! I finally have a friend! " The mother shook her head with tears building up in her own green eyes. " You are smart enough to know that it would be the safest place for you. "
Savannah rolled her eyes and glared at the ground. " I can take care of myself, mother. You know that! I don't need to run away from them, " Before Savannah continue her mother stood up. Her mother then interrupted her and said. " From a kidnapper? It's not smart to stay here. They target children, not adults. You are a child, no matter how mature you are. You are still a child. "
Savannah knew that her mother was right but she didn't want to leave. " Mother, I don't want to leave...Shouldn't I get a say? Do my feelings count towards your decision? Do you even care about them? " Her mother looked down and said. ( No matter how much she knows it will hurt her daughter. She must say it.)
" No, I don't. Not even it comes to your safety. I know that you care about that boy. However, I am more concerned about you. You are my child not him. " Savannah must to her displeasure, started to cry softly. " Can I at least stay until Wednesday? "
Her mother shook her head, still not looking at her daughter. " No, but if you must you can stay until Tuesday. We will leave on Tuesday morning. That will give you time to say your goodbyes. " Savannah nodded as she muttered. " Thank you, mother. "
With that, she headed towards the stairs and paused. She then said. " He's not that bad, Peter, I mean. " Her mother shook her head and said. " I can't control who you speak with. Go to your room and begin to pack. Perhaps retire for the night." Savannah went up the stairs without a word, leaving the mother with her thoughts.
Savannah closed the door to her room softly. She felt her knees begin to tremble as she leaned against the door. She threw her bag a few feet away from herself. Her notebook fell out opened. Savannah started to cry.
Her tears were like the rain in a storm. Brutal and neverending. She should have known that it was the calm before the storm. Now she was in the middle of a hurricane without shelter.
Savannah slid down the door and leaned her head against it. How was she going to tell peter that she failed? That he was losing his best friend without being able to do anything. Nothing that he can do would alter her mother's mind. She knew that much.
What she doesn't know is how she could endure another school. A school where she is the new kid, yet again. A school, without Peter, waiting for her in the forest. A school without anyone she knew. She would be the outcast and loner yet again. Savannah sniffled as she tried to stop the unlimited tears.
