“Eunha, look at this photo.”
Eunha’s deskmate and her most loyal sidekick, Chang Yingying handed over her phone to Eunha.
The person in the photo was none other than Lisa, the girl who was the hot topic in every discussion on campus at the moment.
“She has taken a transfer in the Experimental Classes. I think she looks quite pretty.” The gossiping nature in Chang Yingying kicked in as she commented on the picture.
Eunha cast her eyes on the phone.
The photo only captured the side profile of Lisa, and was a little hazy. Despite that, Eunha felt as if Lisa was proclaiming loudly that she was the most outstanding person, different from the masses.
For a second, Eunha’s eyes lost their shine. Since the day she met Lisa, she had known that Lisa’s prettiness would catch people’s attention. But Eunha didn’t expect that this day would come so soon.
She could not quite figure out why Lisa seemed so different than what she had expected her to be.
She had heard that Lisa was a coward who lived with a sense of inferiority complex during her growing years!
Eunha suppressed the questions which she had and lowered her gaze. By the time she looked up, there were no signs of unhappiness visible on her face. She agreed with Chang Yingying’s comment in a gentle voice. “Yes, she is pretty.”
Chang Yingying felt scared all of a sudden. How could she praise another girl’s looks in front of her muse?
Wasn’t this an insult to her?
Bothered by this thought, Chang Yingying took her phone away at once and put it on her desk, screen down.
Then Chang Yingying smiled and said, “Anyways, she can never be more beautiful than my Eunha. You are our campus belle. A transfer student that has come from nowhere can never compare with you.”
Eunha lowered her eyelids and reproached her in a low voice. “Yingying, you cannot say that. Lisa is from a county city, but no one can deny that she looks good.”
“Lisa? Eunha, do you know that transfer student? Is she from the countryside?” Chang Yingying felt that she had stumbled across a juicy piece of gossip.
Eunha covered her mouth as if regretting her slip of the tongue. After a while, she whispered. “You can say so. She grew up in the Lu Family earlier.”
Chang Yingying stared at her in astonishment. “So, she is the fake daughter, that imposter?”
The campus belle’s strange life story was well known in the school.
Eunha replied in a severe voice. “Hush, Yingying, keep your voice down. Don’t let anyone hear you.”
Chang Yingying pouted. “Letting other people hear me is not bad. She is an imposter, to begin with. She enjoyed being a daughter of a rich family for over a decade while you lived in the poor family which she originally belonged to… I take my words back. She is not pretty!”
Eunha cast a look downwards, and a faint grin flashed across her lips. She patted Chang Yingying’s shoulder and said to her, “You cannot let anyone know about this. After all, Lisa is innocent.”
But Chang Yingying sneered in response. “Aren’t you innocent as well?”
She did not attach much weight to Eunha’s words. “Eunha, you are too kind. She can take advantage of you!”
But Eunha defended Lisa, ardently. “No, Lisa is not like that.”
“Anyways, don’t let me find out any dirt on her. Or, I will make her life miserable.” Chang Yingying declared, coldly.
Eunha grinned but said nothing else.
Before Lisa left school in the afternoon, Chen Yu told her to stop by the office to finish her enrollment procedure. She was also going to give her a temporary student card.
When she was getting the ID card ready, Chen Yu thought of something that the Dean had told her.
“Lisa, the Dean asked me to tell you this. He managed to pick up the Acceptance Letter from that security guard. The guy was suffering from diarrhea and had forgotten to take his phone with him, which led to that big confusion in the morning. Don’t let it bother you.”
Chen Yu told Lisa what the Dean had instructed her to say.
Lisa thought about it and said, “Ms. Chen, I understand.”
Lisa’s answer was polite. Chen Yu could not help but say a few more words. “You have just come to our school, and may need to adjust yourself. Also, the teaching method which we adopt here is different from that in the county school. The senior year is the most important year of all. If you have any questions, make sure that you ask me. Alright?”
Lisa gazed at Chen Yu.
The latter was just one step away from saying the words, “I know that you are poor in studies, and I am just trying to help you.”
Lisa grinned in return and said, “Ma’am, you can trust me a bit more.”
Lisa sounded confident.
Lisa’s grin took Chen Yu’s breath away. After a moment, Chen Yu was about to say something, only to notice that Lisa was gone.
This student… might not be as bad as Wei Mingzhe had suggested.
**
As soon as Lisa stepped out of campus, her phone began to ring. She took it out and saw that it was an unknown number.
At the same time, she heard someone honking a car. A familiar black sedan fell into her sight.
Lisa raised her eyebrows. She didn’t pick up the call and strode towards the car.
The window lowered, and the person whom she had met this morning, revealed himself. “Want a ride?”
“Why? Are you buying me dinner?” Lisa didn’t get in just yet. She didn’t ask him if he was waiting for her on purpose, either.
Jungkook put on a faint smile, which washed away some of the coldness on his face. “Sure, no problem.”
Lisa pulled the back door open and replied. “Fine. But I have to get back home right after dinner. My parents will be worried if I go back too late.”
After she got into the car, Lisa texted Song Chaerin.
“Since when have you started to behave yourself?” Jungkook started the car. He looked at Lisa in disbelief. He was thinking of that neighbourhood girl who would often climb over the wall at night, just to have fun.
Lisa turned around and looked into his eyes. Instead of answering him, she asked him, instead. “When did I not behave myself?”
Jungkook burst into laughter and shook his head. If he told her that he had seen her in action, she might accuse him of stalking her. Therefore, he chose not to answer the question.
Not long after, Jungkook pulled the car in front of a private home-cooking restaurant. The decoration of the place looked quite exquisite.
They went to a private room. Lisa put her bag down and picked up the menu. She had ordered a few dishes before she remembered the man sitting across her.
Jungkook added two more dishes and told the waiter to go, leaving only him and Lisa in the room.
Lisa was playing on her phone when she asked him in a casual voice. “How did you get my phone number?”
She didn’t remember having given him her number.
Jungkook poured himself a cup of tea. The enshrouding steam dispersed in the air.
He said, “Your grandma told me to take care of you.”
Lisa looked up at Jungkook in surprise. She never thought that she would hear such words from his mouth.
Jungkook took a sip of his tea, gracefully. “After you left, your grandma and I talked a lot.”
Lisa thought of the lady who would wake up early every morning to cook breakfast for her and wait for her by the door, every night.
A warm smile spread on her face. “Is everything fine with her?”
Jungkook said slowly, “She is doing fine. But she is not as spirited as before. I think she misses you terribly.”
Lisa looked down. For a moment, neither of them said a thing. When she left the small county, Lisa had deliberately not waited for her grandma to come back from the hospital so that their parting would be less sad.
A moment later, Jungkook added. “But your foster mom has brought your grandma back to the city. You can visit her any time.”
Lisa nodded her head. She knew that He Seohyung would do so. Hence, she was not surprised to hear this. At the same time, she was puzzled by another fact. “Why do you know all of this?”
When she was still in Fuxian County, this man lived next door. But, he didn’t visit them much, and her grandma had never mentioned him.
Jungkook raised his eyebrows and gave a different response. “I even know where your grandma lives.”
Lisa suddenly broke into laughter. “You know so much. Are you a bodyguard whom my foster mom has hired?”
Jungkook’s face twitched as the sound of her voice faded away.
A bodyguard?
He, bodyguard?
He finally found his voice and said, dryly, “How creative is your thought process!”
Lisa cheekily replied to him. “Thank you. Jokes aside, I don’t think that my foster mom is generous enough to hire a bodyguard to follow me.”
Lisa’s voice held disdain. Jungkook smirked but didn’t say anything.
The waiter came in to serve the dishes. After all the dishes were served, it was the two of them in the room again.
Jungkook changed the topic and said, “This morning at the gate, you weren’t allowed in. Was it because the security guard took your Acceptance Letter away?”
“So, you also know about this?” Lisa stared at him.
Jungkook smiled and said, “I overheard it.”
Lisa pouted and picked a piece of rib for herself and mumbled. “How good is your hearing!”
Jungkook leaned back in his chair. He had not touched the dishes yet. “I take it that your transfer process was not smooth.”
His remark seemed to hold a deeper meaning.
Lisa paused in her actions. She remembered the call which she had received from He Seohyung and a scornful grin flashed past her lips.
She said with a shrug, “Just some vile person causing trouble.”
“Do you need any help?” Jungkook asked.
Lisa kept her eyes on the dishes, while the food in her mouth muffled her voice. “Nope.”
After dinner, Jungkook paid the bill and asked Lisa. “Do you want to visit your grandma now?”
Lisa shook her head. “No, it is getting late today. Some other time.”
“I will text you her address later,” said Jungkook.
“OK.”
**
By the time Lisa arrived home, it was almost eight. She felt some odd vibe in the house as soon as she came through the door.
Huo Jiyong and Song Chaerin sat in the living room with the TV off. They seemed to be in a serious mood. Why?
Lisa wondered.
She greeted them and said, “Mom, Dad, I am back.”
Song Chaerin stood up from the sofa and walked to Lisa. Since her mind was weighed down, even her smile was forced.
“How was your first day at school? Any problems?” Song Chaerin asked.
“It was good.”
After two seconds’ of pause, Lisa asked her. “Mom, do you have any questions for me?”
Song Chaerin was embarrassed that her daughter had seen through her. “Not really. I am just wondering who you went to dinner with. Your classmate?”
So, this was what had been bothering her.
Lisa shook her head and said, “No.”
Song Chaerin put forward another question, gingerly. “A boy or a girl?”
Lisa looked at Song Chaerin, and replied patiently. “With a guy, who was my next-door neighbor in the county. I once helped him out and happened to run into him today. So, he treated me to dinner.”
Song Chaerin looked into her daughter’s eyes. Seeing how sincere she was, somehow, Song Chaerin felt guilty about all those filthy thoughts she had on her mind.
Awkwardly, she touched her nose and gave up on asking more questions.
In a gentle voice, Song Chaerin said, “Oh, I see. Don’t misunderstand me. I am just worried that staying out too late is dangerous. You are a girl.”
Lisa could not understand what was really on Song Chaerin’s mind, but she had a hunch. She answered obediently. “I understand.”
Hearing her sweet voice, once again, Song Chaerin felt guilty about her speculation. “You must be tired after your first day at school. Go and take a shower. Don’t stay up too late.”
“Oh, and I have kept some warm milk for you. Take it upstairs with you and drink it before going to bed.”
Song Chaerin hurried to the kitchen as she said so and took out the milk which had been kept in the heat-insulated box. She handed it over to Lisa with a smile.
“Sure. Thanks, mom.”
After Lisa went upstairs with the milk, Song Chaerin heaved a sigh.
She went back to the living room and sat down besides her husband. She started blaming herself. “I am not a good mom. How can I question my daughter’s integrity?”
Huo Jiyong patted her hand. “I have told you that you need to trust your daughter more. Don’t speculate wildly just because of some rumors.”
Song Chaerin glared at him. “It is our oldest son who misled me, today. He called me and said something about paying attention to the friends Lili was making. That is why… Never mind. Let me call him. I have to ask him why he dislikes his sister!”
Song Chaerin was really angry. Huo Jiyong shook his head and stopped her before she could dial the number.
“Jin and Lili are on bad terms. If you call and question him now, it will only deepen their misunderstanding. Don’t you think?”
Song Chaerin’s fingers stopped and she threw the phone away.
After a moment, she said in an upset voice, “This is such a headache.”
“I don’t think that this is such a big problem. Lili has just come back, and they don’t know each other well. Don’t push them.”
Compared to Song Chaerin who was overthinking, Huo Jiyong was more composed.
Song Chaerin heaved another sigh and leaned against the soft cushion on the sofa. Suddenly, something came to her mind.
She sat up again and said, “I almost forgot about this. Eunha is friends with Jin. I can ask Eunha to act as a mediator between them.”
Huo Jiyong squinted at her and shook his head again. He disapproved of the idea. “Have you forgotten? It was because Jin mentioned Eunha that he and Lili became estranged.”
“I didn’t forget. I am just saying that Eunha is a kind girl, and she studies at No.1 Middle School, as well. If I ask her to get to know Lili more, it will be the first step to patch things up between Lili and Jin.”
As a mom, Song Chaerin felt that her mind was forever occupied with her children.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
