The morning sunlight streamed through the windows of Woodsboro High School, casting long shadows across the hallways filled with students. The usual cacophony of laughter and chatter was muted, replaced by an undercurrent of unease that seemed to seep into every corner of the school. The buzz of anticipation and gossip hung thick in the air as a cluster of reporters gathered outside, their cameras flashing intermittently, creating a flickering pattern of light against the school's brick facade.

Sidney and Madison Prescott walked through the main entrance, their backpacks slung over their shoulders. Madison's mind was still clouded by the events of the previous evening. She had been at Casey Becker's house, a place filled with the warmth of friendship and the comfort of shared confidences. They had spent the night discussing their future plans, their dreams, and the trivialities of teenage life. As Madison had left Casey's house, the night had seemed ordinary and their friendship secure.

The memory of Casey's laughter and the easy conversation they had shared felt like a cruel juxtaposition to the horrific news that awaited her. Madison's fingers fumbled inside her backpack, searching for something to anchor her, a book or a notebook—anything to distract her from the gnawing anxiety. But the more she searched, the more disconnected she felt from the tangible world around her.

Sidney noticed her sister's distracted demeanor and gently nudged her. "Hey, Maddie, what's wrong? You've been out of it all morning," she said, her voice filled with concern.

Madison looked up, her gaze drifting toward the front of the school. The sight of reporters crowding around, their microphones thrust forward and their cameras clicking incessantly, caused a jolt of anxiety to shoot through her. "Why are there reporters here?" Madison asked, her voice laced with apprehension and confusion.

Before Sidney could respond, Tatum Riley burst into view, her face unusually pale and her eyes wide with distress. She moved with an urgency that made her seem almost frantic. "Do you believe this shit!?" she exclaimed, her voice high-pitched and trembling.

Madison flinched at Tatum's sudden outburst. "Where the hell did you come from?" Madison demanded, though Tatum was too engrossed in her own worry to acknowledge the question.

Sidney's brow furrowed as she looked at Tatum, her own concern growing. "Damn! What the fuck happened?" she asked, her voice a mixture of curiosity and alarm.

Tatum's face was a mask of sorrow and disbelief as she leaned in close, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "You guys haven't heard? Casey Becker and Steve Orth were murdered last night."

The impact of Tatum's words was immediate and staggering. Sidney's eyes widened in shock, and her breath hitched in her throat. Madison felt as though the ground had been yanked out from beneath her. The memory of her last moments with Casey—her laughter, her warmth—collided violently with the horrifying reality of Tatum's news. The world around her seemed to slow, the noise of the school fading into a distant hum as she tried to process what she had just heard.

"No... I was just at Casey's house," Madison said, her voice barely more than a whisper. "I left her just before..." Her words faltered, her mind reeling as she recalled Casey's anxious smile and the way she had clung to their last hug. The images of their evening together now felt like a cruel irony.

Tatum's eyes were filled with a mix of sadness and cold detachment. "I know, Maddie. You left just before it happened. It's all over the news. The police found them this morning. It was..." Her voice trailed off, unable to find the words to describe the brutality of the crime. "It was horrific."

Sidney's gaze shifted between Tatum and Madison, her concern deepening as she saw the effect of the news on her sister. "Casey Becker? She sits next to me in English."
