You trudged through the debris, making sure you didn't trip over anything.
You were trying to find her. Where was she, anyways? Before the both of you parted ways, you promised each other to meet back at the same spot. Yet, it's been hours since you've last heard from her. You couldn't get a hold of her when you tried; she never answered any of your calls. Worried, you came back here, only to be met with this sight.
As you surveyed the area, your heart ached. These buildings were still standing when you both first arrived, now they're just heaps of concrete on the ground. There was no sign of life anywhere, save for the few injured civilians being escorted by fellow pro-heroes.
You really hope she's alright.
As you walked further down the path, it slowly became eerily quiet. Too quiet for your liking, you'd say. All you could hear was the crunching of grass and dirt beneath your boots.
Suddenly, you stopped dead in your tracks.
It felt as if you were stepping on something hard. You didn't step on it fully, so you looked down, curious to know what was in your way. When you realised what it was, your face paled.
It was Midnight's mask.
There it laid, crumpled and dirty. You didn't think it was because you had accidentally stepped on it, though; it seems that it was already in this state before you came.
Squatting down, you reached your hand out to pick it up. That's when you noticed those tiny traces of blood on her mask. There was a trail of it, too, leading to who knows where. That doesn't mean anything good .
You stood up slowly, taking shaky steps as you followed the blood trail. That's when your eyes landed on the very thing you never wished to see.
Your partner was lying on the ground, severely injured and on the brink of death.
"Ne...muri?" You whispered.
Hearing your voice, she turns her head towards you. She flashes you a pained smile.
"y/n..."
"Sorry you have to... see me like this."
Your eyes were darting all over the place. From the blood pooling around her, to the gaping wound on her body; you couldn't stop looking. Even when your mind was screaming for you to get help, you couldn't bear to leave. Not yet.
"How... Who...?" You asked, kneeling down next to her. You wanted to help her, you needed to help her, but you weren't even sure what you were supposed to do. You could only stare at her face as you tried your best to keep it together.
"Why... didn't you call for help?"
She sighed, pointing towards her b roken cellphone. As your eyes wandered towards it, you couldn't help but notice how the pool of blood around her kept growing. It was starting to stain your costume. Wanting to do something about it, you started tearing off pieces of your clothes that were still clean.
Nemuri watched as you tried to stop the bleeding. You weren't doing well, to say the least; Every single piece of fabric you had placed on her wound was immediately soaked red.
After a while, she tells you, "y/n, you should go back to the rest... Just leave me here and I'll be fine."
"Fine?" You asked, tearing off more cloth, "You're not fine! I... I have to help you... I have to do something... I can't let you-"
She shakes her head. "I just don't want you to watch me leave you..."
"So please, hurry, leave me," she whispers, reaching her hand out to caress your cheeks. It felt weirdly cold.
"I can't breathe..."
You shook your head, your tears dripping onto her face. You didn't realise you were crying.
"Please don't say you love me," you sobbed.
She smiles again. Using whatever strength she had left, she raises her other hand towards your face, placing it on your other cheek.
"I love you."
Pulling you closer towards her, she brings your face towards her own.
She kisses you, so gently, so passionately. You kissed her back desperately, as you tried to savour every moment you had left with her.
You wanted this moment to last. Of course you wanted it to last.
But, good things always come to an end.
As you slowly pulled away, you felt her hands slowly fall from your face. Even though you knew this would happen, even though you couldn't stop it, you couldn't help but cry even harder.
You held her hand in yours as you watched her eyes flutter shut, never to open again.
You brought her hand towards your face one last time, resting it on your cheek. It was as cold as ever, but you didn't care.
"Nemuri..."
"I love you so much that it hurts."
