Felix was sitting in the living room, reading over a note that Linda had left him. She had left him. He was reading it for the fifth time that hour. He kept reading and reading, over and over and over again.

The only thing that could take his eyes off that note was a bottle of dirt-cheap whiskey. He had a few sips before he checked his watch. Oh, dear. 4:45 already. He had to get to Jack's house to pick Sophie up for her spring festival.

It was a quiet drive, the rumble of the engine being the only thing he heard. Eventually, he reached the home of the Waltens, and he knocked on the door at precisely 5:00.

"Uncle Felix!" Sophie said when she opened the door, smiling up at him. He smiled back, but Sophie's joy faded a bit. "Uncle Felix? What happened to your eyes?"

"Whatever do you mean, Sophie?" He asked, tilting his head slightly. Sophie's brow creased slightly and she shook her head.

"Never mind. Let's just go to the school." Felix nodded and she got in the passenger seat of his car. It was new, a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. She remembered him bragging about it over the phone. It was so important to him, yet it already smelled of alcohol. It made Sophie a bit nervous.

The two of them didn't talk the whole ride to the party. Sophie was uncomfortable. Felix usually tried to start a conversation or at least turned on the radio. Something was definitely off.

Once they finally arrived at the school, Felix sent her on her way and made a beeline for the back of the school. There, as he was hoping, he found a little makeshift bar. Not many others were there, so he had the room to himself, besides the lonely bartender.

Sophie had enjoyed the night, talking with friends and dancing, completely carefree. Felix had spent his time silently in they drinking zone, the only words he uttered being requests for more alcohol. Time flies.

Sophie, now worried, began searching for her uncle Felix. It was a half hour since she was supposed to be home. She prayed that he wouldn't be where she thought he was, but eventually, the only remaining place to check was that room in the back.

Sure enough, Felix was sitting at that silent bar. Nobody else was there, not even the employees. She walked up to him and tugged gently at his sleeve. He looked at her, surprised, and smoothed down his hair.

"Sophie... it's late. Let's get you home. Your parents will be worried." He muttered, getting up. Sophie began to sweat.

     "Uncle Felix, are you drunk?"

"No. No, no, just tired. Come on. Let's go." He said, patting her on the shoulder and heading out to his car. She followed him anxiously.

It was another silent car ride. Sophie had tried to start up a conversation a few times, talking about her friend Jenny or the music they had played, but nothing seemed to work.

"Felix, why were you drinking?" She asked. His grip on the wheel tightened.

"Because Linda left me." He replied, his lips pursed. Sophie didn't know how to respond. Aunt Linda had seemed so happy the last time she saw her, what happened between the two? A few more minutes passed.

"Uncle Felix, you're driving pretty fast. And where are your glasses? It's not safe for you to be driving without your glasses, you told me so." Felix turned to her with a scowl.

"Listen, Sophie, I'm just trying to get you home quickly. It's late, I'm stressed, and your parents are probably really worried for you."

Sophie turned and stared out the window at the pitch black. She didn't notice when Felix's eyelids start to droop, or when he started to lower his head, or even when he began to drift into the other lane.
