The storm had blown itself out by the following morning, though the ceiling in the Great Hall was still gloomy; heavy clouds of pewter gray swirled overhead as Y/n, Harry, Ron, and Hermione entered for breakfast.

"Hey, y/n."

Y/n turned quickly at the call of her name and saw it was Rory Ellington who had said those two words. Rory was a Gryffindor in the year above (5th year) and was in her opinion very attractive. He was the same boy y/n met in library when she fell asleep in there studying for her end of year exams. Rory woke her up as the library was closing and the two walked back to Gryffindor common room together. He was very kind to her and they had formed a minor friendship.

"Hi, Rory." y/n said and shot him a smile before turning back and walking down the table with her three friend, slightly red in the face.

"Are you blushing?" Hermione asked, teasingly after she got a look of y/n's face.

"No," she replied quickly, "it's cold in here."

"It is not." Hermione argued smirking at her best friend.

Y/n ignored her and took her usual seat as Professor McGonagall started handing out class schedules.

"Today's not bad . . . outside all morning," said Ron examining todays subjects "Herbology with the Hufflepuffs and Care of Magical Creatures . . . damn it, we're still with the Slytherins. . . ."

"Double Divination this afternoon," Harry groaned, looking down.

"You should have given it up like me and y/n, shouldn't you?" said Hermione briskly, buttering herself some toast.

"You're eating again, I notice," said Ron, watching Hermione start to munch on her toast.

"I've decided there are better ways of making a stand about elf rights," said Hermione.

"Yeah . . . and you were hungry," said Ron, grinning while looking at her.

After their first class, Herbology with the Hufflepuffs the quartet plus the other Gryffindors, made their way to Hagrid's hut for Care of Magical creatures while the Hufflepuffs went to the castle for Transfiguration.

Hagrid was standing outside his hut, one hand on the collar of his enormous black boarhound, Fang. There were several open wooden crates on the ground at his feet.

"Mornin'!" Hagrid said, grinning at the quartet as per usual . "Better wait for the Slytherins, they won't want ter miss this — Blast- Ended Skrewts!"

"Come again?" Questioned Ron.

Hagrid pointed down into the crates.

"Eurgh!" squealed Lavender Brown, jumping backward.

"Only just hatched," said Hagrid proudly, "so you will be able ter raise them yourselves! Thought we'd make a bit of a project of it!"

"And why would we want to raise them?" said a cold voice.

The Slytherins had arrived. The speaker was Draco Malfoy. Crabbe and Goyle were chuckling appreciatively at his words.

"Not this guy again." y/n muttered, rolling her eyes.

"I mean, what do they do?" asked Malfoy. "What is the point of them?"
