A little backstory before we start.
Lyla Jade Casey is the younger sister to Matthew Casey and Christie Casey.
She cut ties with Matt and Christie shortly after their mother killed their father in 1997.
She hasn't heard from her siblings since their mother's last trial when Lyla was 21.
Lyla loved to sing and draw. It was two of her favorite things to do when she was bored.
She was kind and loved the thrill and feeling of being faced with a challenge. To some, that made it look like she wasn't afraid of anything.
But, what she was most passionate about was helping others. So she made a plan.
At 23, Lyla moved to Indiana to start her life. There, she became a firefighter at station 1 in Indianapolis.
At 25, she met Josh Jacobs. He was a sweet and caring guy that she met at a coffee shop. To her surprise, Josh was anything but sweet. He would abuse her when she did or said something he didn't like.
When she turned 26, the couple got into a disagreement. Josh got mad and Lyla ended up spending a few nights in the hospital.
As soon as she returned to work, she put in a request to transfer to a different firehouse. She requested to go to firehouse 51 in Chicago.
Lyla was scared for her life. The next time she might not be so lucky. She didn't want to die that way. She needed to get out. She figured this was the only way she could.
