"You should," I say. "There are so many black cats at the shelter that need adopting."
She nods, cuffing her sleeves. "Time to fix the hex I put on you."
"Oh, yeah." Right to business. That's fine. "The moths ate almost everything in my closet, and the rats are multiplying. I left my place in a bit of chaos."
Callisto's gaze flicks over my tiny white dress again. Something about the way she's looking at me puts a flutter in my belly, and I stand taller.
"I'm glad the moths didn't eat that dress," she says. "You'd better sit. Come to the couch."
What does that mean? Does she like the dress? Is she being sarcastic?
I put the piggies back on the table with the bundle of parsley, then sit on the green velvet loveseat. Callisto kneels in front of me, positioning herself at my shins. My knees brush against her breasts—and I hope she didn't hear the way my breath just hitched.
She holds out her hands, palms up, and I hesitate. Does she want me to hold her hands?
"Come on," she says, wiggling her fingers.
Okay, I guess I am supposed to hold her hands.
I place my palms against hers. She's warm and soft, and a lick of fire goes through me as we touch.
She locks my gaze, kneeling in front of me, and my insides are doing backflips.
"Your pulse is racing," she says softly. "Are you nervous?"
"Something like that."
Her lips quirk.
She draws a slow breath, holding my hands, and begins murmuring.
A sharp pain goes through my hands like a static shock.
"Ow!" I say, trying to pull back.
"Reversing a hex isn't as simple," she says. "I'm sorry, but this might hurt."
"I don't want it to hurt! Is this why you made me sit down? Ow, Callisto—"
She keeps murmuring. The pain intensifies, traveling up my arms, into my chest, down into my legs, up into my head.
I gasp, trying to break free. "Callisto, stop. This isn't—"
"Almost done."
She mumbles faster, holding my hands tighter, and I lose feeling in my legs.
When she finally lets go, I gasp for breath, slumping forward.
"There," she says softly, "that'll get rid of the spiders, moths, rats, snakes, termites, and scorpions."
"Termites and scorpions?"
She grimaces.
After a pause, she puts her hands on my thighs, holding my gaze. "Are you okay? I'm sorry. I didn't want to tell you that it would hurt because you might not have wanted to do it."
"Well, you were right," I snap, a little angry with her for putting me through all of this. "I think I would've just chosen to live with snakes in my car."
Her mouth twists, and I catch a glimpse of what might be regret in her light gray eyes. "I only put that hex on you because I was worried that you would adopt another cursed pet and get yourself killed. I needed to guarantee that you would contact me if you went through with another adoption."
"Good plan," I mumble, still a little pissed off, but also touched that she was trying to protect me from something worse.
She's still kneeling in front of me, hands on my thighs. This tiny dress makes the touch more intimate. Heat builds low inside me.
"Thanks," I say, putting my hands over hers before she can pull away.
"Of course." She looks at my hands, unmoving.
My pulse is racing from the counter-hex—and accelerating. What is Callisto thinking about, and why hasn't she stood up and asked me to leave? She was all business when I walked in.
She's such an extraordinary person, and painfully beautiful. I want to be part of her life in some way other than a business transaction.
Again, I indulge in the fantasy of living here with her, just the two of us in the quiet countryside. Strolling around the property hand-in-hand, dining on our home-grown vegetables, watching storms over Lake Erie from our back porch... I could adopt as many pets as I want, even goats and donkeys. We could build a life together, and I could help her tend her crops—and if we were feeling mischievous, we could have sex in the greenhouses.
Would she be open to romance, or is her life too complicated for that?
I guess there's one way to find out.
