My name is Mateo, a 73 year old man. I'm currently on a hospital bed. The doctors say that today will be my last day to live because of my sickness. I'm just staring at the ceiling, no one to talk to. I don't have a wife, children, friends or any relatives that are alive. No one liked me because of my straight forward attitude. They think that I don't care on what happened. Example, 48 years ago when I was 25 years old one of my friends got hit by a car. My friends and his family were worried sick. They were crying and crying and they wondered if he's gonna be okay or not. I just said "No, he's gonna die." My tone was emotionless as if I didn't care if he died or not but I did. To say it so easily they got mad at me. Though I was correct a few hours later, he died..
Oh! Now I remember her. She was the only person who talked to me even when I have that attitude. To think that I would start reminiscing about her after 43 years we last met makes me want to laugh. Now it all started 43 years ago. I was in a vacation in England. I decided to stay there for two months. I met her in the hotel I was staying at. She was a hotel cashier. I was paying money to another hotel cashier when I saw her running while saying "Hi! Hi! Sorry I'm late! My alarm didn't ring." "It's fine. Make sure not to be late next time though or you'll get a scolding from boss. Now I need to go to the bathroom. Take my place." The hotel cashier that was in front of me said while walking towards the bathroom.
The hotel cashier who was late then walked in front of me saying "Good morning sir. How may I help you?" "I would like to get a room for two months." I said. "All right sir. Please wait." She said while going through her computer. She looked beautiful and nice. She looked like she was around 27 years old then while I was waiting I saw her name tag on her chest. It said "Hailey" It was a beautiful name. She then told me the price, then I paid then she gave me the key to my room. I went on the elevator then went inside my room.
A week later. My staying at the hotel was good. The food was delicious, nice quality tv and a big bed. It was a good Sunday morning so I decided to drink coffee in a nearby café. That café just opened four days ago and so there were many people. After paying the cashier for my drink I took a seat. Everything was peaceful until that hotel cashier that was late a week ago named "Hailey" came in and saw that there were no seats left. She walked around for a while until she stood in front of me then said "Uhm sir, can I please sit here? It's because there's no seats left and I've been waiting all week to come here I was busy in the past few days and I can't go here next time because I'm gonna become really busy." "Sorry miss but-" I said then she said "Please sir! Please please please please please!" I stared at her, sighed then said "fine".
She smiled widely then ordered her coffee. We were both drinking our coffees quietly until she suddenly talked to me. At first I ignored her but she kept on talking and talking so it made me annoyed. "Miss, stop. You're annoying." I said thinking that it will make her silent but she just laughed then said "I know right!" I was a little surprised that she didn't got mad or sad because of me. She then began to ask and ask questions so I had no choice but to answer.
30 minutes later I decided to go home so I stood up and was about to leave when she asked "Sir! Where are you going?" "I'm going back, miss Hailey." I said without much thought. "Huh? Miss Hailey? How do you know my name? I didn't say it??" Hailey said. "Your name tag a week ago." I said. "huh? Ohh now I remember! You're that guy who saw me running 'cause I was late!" Hailey said. "yes now goodbye" I said. "Bye sir! It's been nice talking to you!" Hailey said then I left without saying a word.
Three days later I was walking towards the exit of the hotel when I saw her again and she saw me so she went towards me saying "Hi sir! It's my break time right now, wanna hang out?" "no" I said then went outside the hotel but she just followed me talking and talking. Three weeks later, she continued to follow me and I didn't mind. I didn't want to admit it but I enjoyed talking to her.
A week later I realized my feelings for her but decided to ignore it because there were 3 weeks left before I had to go home. We continued to hang out whenever she had free time. We went to an amusement park, a restaurant, a café, a book store and many more places. I really did have fun.
Three weeks later. It was the day where I had to go home. We were both in the airport, a few minutes left before my plane will leave. Hailey was crying and hugging me. "C-Can't you live here?" She asked. "I'm sorry Hailey.. I can't." I said sadly. Hailey then cried more "I can't come to visit you.. so please try to visit me, okay?" "I'll try Hailey.." I said. "I'll wait for you, okay? So visit me." Hailey said. "I will. Now I gotta go, okay? Goodbye Hailey." I said. "Goodbye Mateo.." Hailey said. I left then that was the last time I saw her.
She was my first and last love. I miss her.. I wish I can just hug her one last time before I die later. I wonder how's she doing? Is she still alive? Is she eating good? Does she have a lover? Does she still remember me...? I have so many questions but no one can possibly answer them for me. All I can do now is to reminisce about her until my last breath.
