Chapter 5: Jaya's Birthday Party

The dance performance day went by fast. Jaya's birthday was the next day so decided on some stuff before going home. We had decided to go to a concert and dinner for her birthday. We were discussing this at the cake shop. "Which restaurant should we go to? I'm feeling some steak. " Tino said. Leah hits Tino slightly on the top of his head. "Dummy! This is not your birthday. Jaya gets to decide." Leah says in a stern tone. "I don't really mind where we go. As long as there's food." she said with no expression. "Ouu how about steak? Pizza? Tacos?" Tino shouted. "How about Zimbabwean food? You know, like sadza and muriwo?" I suggested. "Okay let's have Zimbabwean food then.", Jaya said while looking at me grinning. "HUH? Why do you only listen to Tapiwa? Jeez." Tino said, pouting. "Okay enough pouting. Let's all go get Starbucks." Leah said while hugging Tino sideways. We all began to walk out of the shop and headed towards Starbucks. Tino dared Leah to race to get there first and they already went ahead. Jaya and I stayed behind while they ran ahead. "Tapiwa, want to come to my house before the concert?" Jaya said softly. I nodded my head agreeing to go. It's not the first time I've been to her house but for some reason I felt more excited. It was the next day and it was hours before the concert. It was now Jaya's birthday. We all decided that we would do gifts at dinner but I had to bring my gift over for Jaya's house since we would go to dinner right after. I knocked on her door and her dad answered it. "Tapiwa, it's been so long, how are you doing? You look all dolled up." he said with a grin. "I'm good Mr. Foster. And thank you I just bought this outfit." I replied. "I love the colour of those cuffed jeans. And the top suits you. The butterfly on it looks amazing." He said nicely. "Thank you! Is Jaya in her room?" I said walking in the house and taking off my shoes. He pointed to the kitchen so I walked over there. I waved hi to Mrs. Foster on my way to the kitchen. When I walked in, Jaya was there cutting strawberries with her hair in a bun. She didn't notice me walking in so I snuck up behind her and hugged her from behind. "What are you doing here not getting ready?" I said with a mischievous smile on my face. She tilted her head slightly to the right and looked at me. "I'm cutting you some strawberries to eat. Come on, let's go upstairs." she replied softly. Jaya and I then went upstairs to her room. I picked out a book on Jaya's bookshelf and started reading it as I lay on her bed. She was looking through her closet for quite a while. I accidentally fell asleep with the book on my face for about 5 mins or so. Jaya woke me up by gently calling my name. When I sat back up, Jaya was standing there in black dress pants and a tucked in white t-shirt. "How does this look?" Jaya said in full seriousness. I always compliment Jaya about how pretty she is but tonight she looked absolutely beautiful. "Tapiwa? Does it look that bad? I'll change." she said with a concerned look on her face. I grabbed her arm to stop her. "Sorry I was just spacing out. You look amazing" I said with a nervous smile. She then moved her face closer to mine. Our faces were about 2cm apart from one another. If I moved forward a little bit, I would have kissed her lips. "What about my makeup? Is it too much?" she asked while looking me in my eyes. Jaya never really put on makeup but tonight she did her eyelashes and a bit of lipstick. I wondered who she was trying to impress. "It is just enough. You look good. Ready to leave?" I said while trying not to blush. Jaya nodded and we grabbed our stuff and headed out to the car. Jaya and I both have our license but I rarely drive. Jaya doesn't drive often either but she drives more than I do. After about 10 mins we arrived at the dinner place. We got out of the car and saw Tino and Leah waiting for us at the entrance. "Can y'all move any slower? Turtles can move faster than you two." Tino said while rolling his eyes. "Sorry, were you two waiting long?" I said while walking over. "Don't listen to him. He is still sulking that you basically chose the place to eat. You guys look amazing lets go inside" Leah said while grabbing Jaya and I's arm. She turned back at Tino and hmphed before dragging us inside. Tino followed right behind us.
