💓 Do I see (~hear) a 'beat'? 🤔 In a screenplay or teleplay, a 'beat' is a moment that propels the story forward and compels the viewer to take stock of what could happen next. ✍️
After Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) puts Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) out of business, Joe realizes he has feelings for Kathleen. He begins to build a face-to-face relationship, still keeping his online identity a secret. But she hates him in person! So Joe shows up at Kathleen's house unannounced. She's sick, and tells him to go away. A simple "No" isn't enough to deter Joe though. He brings her flowers (🌼 daisies). Rings the doorbell; at first she doesn't let him in, but then he knocks again, and she does. He makes her tea with honey and asks very sincerely if she might consider being his friend. And then...
💕 Joe puts his hand over her mouth as she's about to insult him again. It's shushing her up & not – both at the same time! 🤭 That's the beauty of the moment! 🌼 From this 'daisy moment' on, she begins to think differently about Joe Fox! 🤗 And the story progresses towards a happy union of the two. 💞
A lot of critics have a problem with this scene because:
📍Joe is a stranger and he 'demands' she become his friend.👎
📍Kathleen is in her pyjamas and she gets into her bed with a 'relative stranger' still in her apartment! 👎
🍀 This scene gives a lot of people chills.🥶 It's an odd scene.
🍀 Fact is, this 'cute' scene has been bothering me too for years. It is a flawed scene in an otherwise great film. But it works! 👍
🍀 Is this scene romantic only because of Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan; and not of Joe & Kathleen? IMHO it's a very important 'beat'! 💓 Cleverly done. No? 🤔
💓 A heartfelt 'beat' like that, 'truly creative', opens a 'window', and widens a writer's imagination. 🌼 I'd surely appreciate & welcome it when i see one. 👍😊🎞️🌼 You've Got Mail (1998) together with Sleepless in Seattle (1993) calls for multiple viewings - both films directed by Nora Ephron. And together with When Harry Met Sally (1989) (Nora is the screenwriter) they are a must watch. 🌼🎞️
