First Contact is a short story and novella collection dating from 1989 to 2001. It is written in the style of a postmodern "pastiche": a work of art that imitates or borrows elements from a variety of different sources, in order to create a unique style or subvert the original meaning, make connections, and open a textual dialogue. They quietly enlist Oliver Troughton to keep Number 6 available as a backup, sparking friction with their brother Jeffrey, who tries to mediate. At The Royal Oak, Andy Underwood makes a dramatic return, claiming Martin Nash has been seen near Milton Keynes. His motives are questioned by locals, unaware that Andy is secretly working for Martin himself.

28th January 1961 After their honeymoon, Bart and Isobel Matthews visit Bart's brother Tommy in his grand Cambridge manor, where Isobel and Tommy quickly bond, and Tommy offers them the best bedroom for the night.
