TALIA POV
That morning was the beginning of the end of the world. Literally. Talia was a normal 17 year old girl going to school on a regular Thursday morning to learn regular things in a regular room. Little did she know that nothing was going to go according to plan today.
Talia got out of bed when her alarm went off at 6:30 in the morning. She packed her bag, had a shower, brushed her teeth, got dressed into her school uniform and did her hair. As any of her friends knew she was a very paranoid person and was ready to run at any moment so she would always pack a spare change of clothes in the bottom of her bag. This morning she just packed some leggings and a shirt.
Once she got on the bus she saw Sydney her best friend. And after making sure her little sister, Ava got on and sat down before turning to Sydney and sitting next to her while putting her bag on the floor.
"Hey Syd, is your family?" Talia asked her. "They are good Mum is feeling a little unwell this morning though but she is going to be ok," Syd replied. We just kept talking about the most obscure topics for the rest of the ride until we got to school. We could talk about anything for hours.
Once we got off the bus I asked her "What class do you have first?" "Oh, I have Music with Mr Lewis, what about you?" "I think I have science with Mrs Fitz." I replied, "Cya later." "Cya Syd."
We went our separate ways and I actually didn't hate Science for once. We dissected the frogs which I found quite interesting a lot of the girls were squealing and it was so annoying, and this group of boys called Jasper, James and Jordan were all throwing frog guts at each other which quite frankly I think everyone found disturbing.
We finally finished science and then I went to English which I have with Syd. We have this teacher named Mrs Pagano who always yells at everyone and I think we all hate her. The class was going as per usual until Jasper got up on the table and began chanting. The class quickly joined in until Mrs Pagano had no control over the class at all.
The bell eventually went and then we had lunch. We sat in our usual spot talking about who in our grade liked who and what we were going to choose for our majors next year. The bell finally went so we ran to the bathroom then rushed to our separate classes.
I then heard over the speaker towards the end of the day can Talia and Ava Kennedy please report to the front office. Once the teacher dismissed me I grabbed my bag anxiety coursing through my veins. I swung it over one shoulder blood pounding in my ears. Feeling slightly lightheaded.
I walked down the front to see the front receptionist telling me that there was a mix-up and my sister had already gone home because she felt sick and my mum needed my help with her. It felt like I had a massive weight removed from my shoulders knowing that was it.
I walked home quickly and unzipped my bag to get the spare keys out of my schoolbag. The door creaked open and I could see anyone. You could have heard a pin drop. The blood immediately rushed up to my head as a bunch of scenarios ran through my head. Somebody murdered them, They had been kidnapped.
I decided to walk forward ready to run out of the door at any moment. I made it to the kitchen before I noticed that my Dad wasn't at home. If the school sends either me or Ava home at any point in the day he will pick us up and take care of us. That was the first red flag.
I continued walking forward when I noticed a light trail of blood and I immediately felt sick, I don't usually feel sick at the sight of blood but I already knew something bad had happened here and I was not sure if I wanted to find out what it was. I left the front door propped open with my school bag whole body on high alert.
I looked down on the living room table to see my mother dead. She was dead. I felt weak at the knees and threw up on the couch. Tears began rolling down my cheeks and I felt queasy but I pushed past the pain as I realised someone had left our radio on and I still had not found my sister. I went over to the radio and began to listen to it. It was around 3 pm now so my school would have finished.
Apparently, there was this virus going around that experts are comparing to mythical zombie apocalypses. It suddenly clicked in my head, that had been why my Mum and sister had felt sick. The Virus had gotten to them. But how?
I was going to have to come back to that question later because I still had not seen my sister. She could be OK still. I slowly walked up my creaky house stairs up to my sister's room. I turned the hallway light on and slowly opened the door.
I heard an ungodly screech and saw my little sister with blood around her mouth looking dead and decayed. How could something so horrible happen to a child so pure. She was only eight. Tears threatened to spill over and I realised that electricity was going to go soon so I needed to get myself together and to a secure place. So I did the only logical thing I could think of,
I called Sydney.
