I slumped down on the side of the drivers seat, legs dangling out the open door. My wings were tucked back and went out the passenger door. The show portion was over, now it was time for the few of these cars that were actually performance tuned and built. But I took this break to just breathe for a second. We had lots of clients wanting cards for our shop which was great, and on my way here I had swung into the family mart and picked up the groceries Mrs.Azumi asked for. I sighed in relief, smiling tiredly at the thought of being able to go directly home, after I drop the car off, and sleep.
I pulled myself out of the car and watched as the non-competitors left the lawn in the middle of the race way. While a show authorities car took chalk based paint to mark out the race way. Smoothed out my black tank top, and dusted off my ripped black jeans. I also rubbed my arms at the open air, My ripped denim jacket was hung up in the back room in a locker with my bag and the groceries.
I heard the airhorn signalling to move the racing cars to their racing posts. There were four or five cars total, six including myself., so this was a relatively small race. The rules were no bumping, and on specific corners you had to drift. Thats about it, or at least those are the only rules I knew of or cared about.
I pulled up in the middle of the group, the guy next to me had an old supra. I had seen it during the show but nobody was there to explain its mods. I figured out eventually it had none, it was just barely cleaned, and had a few new cosmetic updates. So it looked ok, but it was nothing special, and I didn't even see the driver. So when I was signalled to pull up next to him I was kind of curious.
He put his window down and he had a lazy shit eating grin on his face. He had a shitty leather jacket, with an ugly brand t-shirt, and work a gaudy watch on his left hand. His hair was slicked back but pointed out at random directions at the end.
"Whose this little bird?" He mocked in a voice that made my skin crawl with disgust. My wings ruffled lightly at the comment, I had cushions to make driving more comfortable for my wings and back but my wings wee still easily visable to anyone actually looking. I turned my head away slightly and spoke.
"This little bird" I mocked, "is the one whose gonna win."
"a Scirocco? They're nothing. Go back to the show pretty bird, this is where the big boys play." He gloated weakly.
"Just watch. You'll eat my dust." I sneered at him. I rolled my windows up as he glared at me.
I waited in silence for only about 5 more minutes. Before I saw the flag guy reach his pedestal. He waved a fluorescent flag to get our attention. I pressed my brakes, and put myself into drive, making sure all my upgrades were functioning properly. I could hear my engine growling loud and clear. And all my lighter on my dash were clear an indicated no issues. I revved as I looked back up to see the yellow light come on with a beep. I tensed my feet in a position to switch to the gas in a split second, I calmly focused my attention on the coloured strip that indicated our route down the straightaway. Simultaneously I focused on the glow colour from the long light above me. I knew that as soon as the green came on it was go mode.
I counted down with the beeps in my head. Not even blinking while I watched the reflections change to green. My blood jumped and I made the immediate switch to gas. The car ahead of me squealed and sped off, while I skidded of and I kept up behind it. The adrenaline pumping in my veins from doing the initial skid off, had me in the mood to win. I could feel the tires gripping the ground, propelling me forward, the new tires felt they gave me so much more control.
When the track widened I made my move as the others dispersed to move in on 1st place. I slipped between the car to my left and the one ahead of it. And I noticed with a groan that the guy I had argued with before was doing the same thing. He weaved around the car to his right, and pulled in-front of the car behind me. We came up to the first turn, and I pulled the E-brake and held the wheel to the left, as I screeched sideways around the corner. I straightened out my wheels and released the E-brake.
'One lap' I thought as I kept my head high and focused.
Taking turn after turn, I made my way around the track, the supra's driver wasn't bad, but wasn't that great either. He kept slowly combing up on me and chose to pull up next to me, as we pulled up towards the big, almost 360 degree round drift. He made a cut throat gesture at me through the window as we pulled into the turn. I slammed my gas, slammed my E-brake up.
Things felt like slow motion, the dust clouds coming off my right side swirled up like pathetically dry flames, and rocks flew like darts. I felt completely calm in this moment. My eyes shifted to the right to see the man half drifting half turning through the 360. Him front tire was shuddering bad and forth, and suddenly the tire popped.in that moment, i looked him directly in his eyes, and i smiled at him. He only glared furiously in response. he managed to keep control of the car, but because it was a front tire he couldn't continue steering properly so he pulled off to the side and stopped.
I pulled out of the turn, and steadily continued past the finish line. I slowed and stopped in front of a guy. The other cars followed not too long after and pulled up in a messy formation behind me. The only car that wasn't in attendance was the dark silver supra the other guy was driving. I could see his car sitting motionless, 3/4 of the way through the final drift.
I got out of the car and smiled at the small amount of people coming to congratulate us. Turns out most of the drivers got their best time, but this was a new track for me so it was my only time here. We happily chatted and shook hands, but as people started to disperse and move their cars away, I noticed something out of the corner of my vision.
There was movement by the offed car on the turn. A figure walked from beside it and threw something, seemingly a small tornado came out of his arm and made the object soar away.
'So he has a wind quirk.' I was shocked at the random display of anger, and stared too long. Our eyes met. I could feel it, without having to be close enough to see his eyes, I could feel him glaring.
And Without knowing it, I had just set my future in motion.
