1st year, 1971
"Are you nervous, Sirius?" I asked the boy with wild black hair in front of me.
He, as usual, grins, "Of course not... Why would I?" He asks. Boys are so insensible.
"Because you're getting sorted and you told me your mother would disown you if you weren't sorted into Slytherin!" I squealed frustrated at him.
My cousin smiles, "I was joking, Mia." he says laying back in his seat and stealing a glance at me.
I scowl at him.
He knows I hate that nickname.
"First of all" I throw a chocolate frog's container at him, "You don't call me Mia. And second... A-ah" I pause, forgetting what I was going to say.
He giggles.
I stick my tongue out at him.
Sirius just rolls his eyes "Please Amelia, you don't just do that to your favourite cousin!" He says patronizingly.
I do have an awful lot of cousins and uncles and such but one thing I'll never say out loud is that Sirius is, indeed, the cool brother I never had (notice the cool) and I do enjoy spending time with him, when that happens.
Our families are tied by my mother — she's a Black and is Sirius's mum's sister — even though we don't see each other a lot. But uncle Orion has a soft spot for my mum so he lets Sirius come to our house in the Summer. This year he stayed almost an entire month before school started.
This was, for both of us, the first ever year we went to Hogwarts and I, of course, was a bit more excited than Sirius.
I stole a small glance at my wrist watch.
"We're almost getting there!" I half shout.
"Merlin, Amelia! Why'd you had to bloody scream?"
I roll my eyes and continue "I'm going to change..." He looks at me for a full second.
"Oh! I get it... You girls are soooo confusing." Sirius said, standing up and grabbing his little bag. He faced me one last time to announce "I'll be dressing in a boys' compartment, see you later." What a poor excuse for leaving me questioning everything, he could have changed here.
You see, Sirius was my main source of information on Hogwarts... The Sorting with the wand duel — I still have to come up with a plan for that — the Houses, or, as he likes to think, the House.
Gryffindor, the one and only for my cousin.
I don't even —
"Excuse me?" Asks a small voice outside of the compartment. I turn to look and the gingerest person I have ever seen in my entire life is before me. I find it extremely interesting and want to become friends with this strange beauty of a little girl immediately. She's standing by the door next to a tallish boy that seems to be her shadow.
"Do you mind me and... Oh! I didn't even introduced us properly!" She exclaims, somewhat nervous, "I'm Lily Evans and this is Severus Snape."
"Hello" I say motioning for them to come in "I'm Amelia Mayselle but you can call me Amy, Merlin knows it's what everybody does." I smile.
But then I remember "I don't mean to be rude but I was about to change and... Ah-a" I say eyeing the boy, Severus, was it?
Lily looks lost for a bit, eyeing Severus with concern in her eyes, but the boy just shrugs.
"Don't worry Lily, I'll find you at the docks... Save me a seat." I was smiling until he held my gaze with a sort of coldness in his eyes... Like I was stealing Lily away from him.
I was going to say something but he'd already left.
"Is it your first year as well?" I tried to make small-talk.
Lily, who was still bearing the look of freight, turned to look at me with whide eyes "I'm sorry Amelia," and I noticed she used my name not the nickname... Maybe because she thinks I prefer it, "Severus, the boy who was with me... He was my only... Ah-a well..." she bit her lip and I got it.
"Hey! So you found out you were a witch this summer?"I asked, which was a subtle way of asking if she was muggle born or not.
Lily tied her cloak around her neck "Is it that obvious?" She half smiled.
"What?"
"That I'm muggleborn and..." Lily stopped to look at me and her smile twisted.
"And you are a witch just like me... A better one I might say, with your wand poking out of your bag and that big book lying there..." I pointed out, coursing my bloody wand for disappearing every now and then.
Her face lit up "Honestly I thought you'd be meaner... Being pureblooded and all."
Now it was my turn to be mad "Why would you think that? I'm not, for that mather, mean or anything like that... Except for when I'm with my older brother"
Lily looked horrified "I'm sorry it's just Severus told me that pureblooded families are really conceited and..." I cut her of " You should listen less to Severus, then. And make up your own judgements... At least that's what my mum says."
Lily noded and, with a gasp, looked through the window.
"We're here!" She squealed but then her expression changed into horror "Oh my! We're here and we're getting sorted and I'm panicking!", she jumped excitedly.
I, who had much of the same feeling as Lily, held my small bag and my pointy hat and said "Don't worry, it's just the rest of our life's being decided in a few seconds."
She frowned and made a face. A face of fear and excitement and panic and curiosity and everything.
I laughed.•*•*•*•*•*•
The boats that were taking us to Hogwarts looked somewhat insecure and I, personally, didn't feel like having a swim in the Black Lake where the Giant Squid lived and, when I expressed my concerns to Lily and Severus, who, in the end, had met us by lamp that flickered ever so slightly, stated that the Giant Squid didn't like dinning humans but preferred lake weeds and other small creatures. He had read it in Hogwarts, a History.
I was going to trust my instincts and keep my arms inside of the scrawny little thing they called a boat. It's not just the Giant Squid that lives down there.
Of course, with the appearance of Severus, I started wondering where my beloved cousin might be.
Maybe he's flirting with the Giant Squid, it wouldn't be a first.
Then I heard laughing, really loud laughting.
I spotted a black wig of a hair and there he was, my cousin, who has mischief running in his veins, talking with another first year. He was a skinny looking boy with glasses that had a crazy mop for hair in the same shade as Sirius.
Behind him stood another boy with straw colored hair and small eyes.
Does it ever happen that some people just look like animals to you... This boy looked like a mouse and I'm not even joking.
"Oi, Mia!" Sirius called out. The other boys looked at the direction he was looking and their eyes ended up landing on me.
I rolled mine.
He made his way towards me "Want to join us? Oh this is Potter and that is Peter... He told us to call him by his first name, dunno why..."
I looked at them, now up close, and said "Hi, I'm Amelia, not Mia..." The mouse boy, Peter, was waving his hand excitedly.
"Nice to meet you Millie!" He said and I face palmed.
"I'm not... Ahh never mind."
Potter was, I noticed, looking beyond my shoulder to Lily and Severus. Severus was giving him his trade mark cold looks but he didn't seem to notice. He had him gaze fixed on Lily.
Maybe he just finds her extremely ginger like I do.
"Gather up you band o' misfits!" A big, and when I say big I mean enormous man with more beard than face called out.
I looked around to everyone's faces: a copy of whide eyes and mouth opened in amazement.
I grinned.
The journey to the castle itself was short and full of ohs and ahs from Lily and a few from Severus. I, myself, was amazed by everything: from the ghosts to the paintings, from the walls to the empty hourglasses...
Everyone was looking around until we got to these stairs where a severe looking professor stood. She looked like what my brother described as Minerva McGonnagal, the transfiguration teacher.
She was there very, very still, holding a rolled parchment and a wooden stool.
"Please... Please if... PLEASE!" she half shouts and quiet settles. "Thank you. You are now going to go into the Sorting Ceremony where your house will be chosen. Your House can be Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and, the one I'm Head of, Gryffindor."
I could hear Sirius whispering something to his little group. He seemed proud and full of himself... While I... Well I had had better thoughts.
Oh it's time, I think, I'm not ready for the duel... Wait... A stool? What am I going to do? Duel a stool?
We're making our way through the Great Hall, I assume, when McGonnagal puts the stool in front of the four tables and starts calling names.
"Amelia Mayselle" she calls and I'm taken by surprise.
Well duh Amelia! A is the first letter in the-
I make my way towards the stool and sit, my feet barely touching the ground.
One last desperate thought goes through me: one spell... I must remember at least one!
But then I feel a hat being placed in my head and look at my cousin who is grinning mischievously and giggling with Potter and Peter.
That little-
"What do we have here... Amelia Mayselle ah yes Mayselle that would be Slytherin right away... But I don't think so and you don't as well at least with that brother of yours... Now he is truly cunning" the hat spoke in a dragged voice.
It was true... Magically I eyed my brother in the middle of the Slytherin table with his shiny prefect badge in his chest. I'm not like him.
And the hat knows it.
"You do have some wit in you... But not the one that would be explored in Ravenclaw and kindness in you is abundant but not like Hufflepuff... So it must be GRYFFINDOR!"
Needless to say that Sirius did end up in Gryffindor and so did both of his friends. Lily as well.
I wasn't listening to anymore of the names being called, only the ones that stood out... Like a boy with chocolate hair.
He was called before Sirius, and I happend to be looking at him and he looked at me.
He smiled and I smiled.
Remus Lupin was his name.I'm not happy with this ending but I felt like writing so yeah It looks like Amelia and Remus had a click but I don't like it... It sounds so cheesy ajdjdhwksndhs
Please Cote (vote + comment) it's always nice!
In the top (if you're reading this on a phone) is Amelia in the train ride when Sirius says something funny but she doesn't feel like bosting his already very big ego.
Yes, Saiose Ronan is the face claim because way not?
If you are wondering Andrew Garfield is Remus...
I'll do a whole chapter with face claims 😊
bye and thanks for reading
