Flight of the Pendraig Ch5

Meanwhile at Safe Harbor:

Dawn was beginning and painted the sky with warm radiant light, chasing away the darkness and awakening everyone in Safe Harbor. After waking up, the former slaves decided to go look for work in the community.

Katie and her sister Tigré found work in hunting and fishing. Pike found a job as a guard under Tamira's command. Pandora had a little bit of difficulty finding work due to her being a Naga from a desert region, but she found a job as a gardener in the fields. She, Katie, and Tigré often checked the fields for rats or other vermin to eat.

Heather decided to wait till after she recovered from giving birth to her daughter Enora. But she did ask for a job as a seamstress. That was mainly so she could stay at home with her newborn daughter.

As for Ebony, she was still a bit shy around the residents of Safe Harbor, but she started to like Mr. Brown. He's a whole lot nicer than those slavers that captured them. Turns out that Mr. Brown or Cadfael as he preferred to be called is a healer from the Healer's Guild in Negav. Upon hearing about Safe Harbor, he decided to help in whatever way he could. Whether as the community's healer, a confidante, or a voice of reason.

Anyway today, she and Cadfael walked to the entrance of the settlement. Today is Rowan's first day of training to survive Felarya's many perils. Once they arrived, Ebony saw Rowan and Jade facing each other in defensive stances.

"Alright Rowan, today I want to see your fighting style. From yesterday's fight with those succubi, your fighting style was a bit sloppy." Jade said as she got into a defensive stance.

"I know, I'll do better next time," Rowan grumbled and took a stance himself.

Jade nodded and continued. "It's good that you acknowledge your weakness, it's important to learn from them if you want to survive here. Now! We're going to work on your fighting technique. No fire breath or any magic, just brawling."

"Sounds fair, after all, I don't know if I have any magic, to begin with, or how to use it." He replied as both he and Jade circled each other.

"Ready, Begin!" Jade shouted as both she and Rowan dashed forward to strike each other with clenched fists.

The two giants clash punch for punch, both of them taking tremendous stamina blows, though Jade had more experience fighting, Rowan was highly durable. However, it seems that the more punches they exchanged, the more Rowan became aware of his surroundings. He blocked several of Jade's punches and even managed to catch her with a swift kick to the stomach. She grunted from the blow but was able to stay on her feet. She immediately swiped her foot at his knee and tripped him, but Rowan was able to keep his footing. He fell on his wrist and caught it, stopping himself from hitting the ground.

To return the favor, Rowan swung his spaded tail and tripped Jade, causing her to fall to the ground. He stopped and offered her his hand to help her back up. She accepted and they decided to stop for today. Jade was surprised with how well he did for a beginner. With more training, he'll be a formidable force to reckon with.

"You did good, Rowan. With some more training, you'll have a better chance to survive here. But remember, the training is nothing, will is everything. The will to act." She said as she rested against a tree.

"What do you mean?" He asked as he rested on a rock.

"What I mean is that if you don't have the willpower to defend yourself, you'll die here, like how you resisted those succubi trying to enslave your mind and control you. And when Ebony was swallowed, instead of giving up you chose to save her. That's the will to act." Jade told him.
