Chapter 2 - The Creatures of the Depth
Two hours later Megan and I were walking through the empty streets of Brighton. Or well, empty. There were corpses and walls all over the roads. We had decided to go and check for my house, but as it was 6 miles away from the place where it happened we were still walking.
We were now getting very close to the neighbourhood where I lived and I felt a sparkle of hope when I saw that some houses were still standing. We were about to pass the house of Alfie's parents soon. I prayed that nothing had happened to them but as far as we had walked already, we were the only two survivors.
If we would turn the corner of the street here, I would see if they were alright. I stopped right before the corner not wanting to look.
"What's up?" Megan asked me concerned.
"My parents in law live just around the corner," I informed her. "They're my second family. I don't want to..." Words were stuck in my throat. It was all so messed up. Why did this happen without any warning? I felt tears welling up in my eyes. This must be some bad dream I'm in.
"I could look first if you want me to?" she proposed as she saw how scared I was. I nodded quickly agreeing.
"It's the second house on the left."
Megan nodded and gave me a hug before disappearing behind the corner. I tried to keep breathing but I struggled as she stayed away for a long time. Panic filled me up and I couldn't help myself. I ran into the street where the Deyes lived. My eyes widened at the sight. Their house was completely shattered, as were the houses around it.
"No," I whispered to myself. Maybe they weren't home when it happened. Maybe they're on a holiday. I tried to convince myself that they were still alive. Then I saw Megan walking through the ruins of what was once Alfie's home. I just kept standing where I stood. Frozen to the ground.
After a while Megan came back to me. She hugged me tight and told me she'd found three bodies. She asked me if I wanted to look who they were or if I wasn't able to do it. I instantly felt nauseous but agreed to take a look. Slowly I made my way towards the people.
I immediately recognized Alfie's mother and father. Tears started to fill my eyes. They were such nice people and it hurt me deeply to see them like this. I thought about Alfie. How would he react if he knew that this had happened to his family?
"You might not want to see the third body," Megan warned me. "It's a male but I figure something fell on his head..."
"I want to see him," I answered because I thought it would be Sean, Alfie's brother in law. Sean and I had become great friends and I wanted to see him one last time.
"Zoe, his head is... gone," said Megan. "Don't look at it. That's not how you want to remember him."
I thought about it for a minute and realised that she might be right. I already couldn't forget the image of Alfie's parents and their bodies still looked alright. Seeing Sean like that...
"You're right," I said calmer than I actually was. Tears pricking in the corners of my eyes. "Let's go then."
"Are you sure? We could sit down for a moment."
"No," I protested. "That's only going to make things worse."
"Whatever you want," she replied.
"Where's your family?" I asked her curiously. She turned her head away from me at once and continued walking without another word.
About ten minutes later we were still walking but we stopped straight away when we heard the most terrific shriek I had ever heard in my life. We both looked at each other with fear in our eyes. It sounded like some huge animal was dying. What we saw next was so unreal I didn't believe it at first. They looked like humans at first sight but if you looked better you could see that they were dead humans. They came running through the streets and were heading our way.
Terrified I looked at Megan for help. Without speaking she handed me a knife."Just in case," she told me. "RUN!" she then screamed. I turned away from the creatures that had started to run as well. I tried to keep up with Megan but she was way faster than me.
"Wait!" I cried but she couldn't hear me anymore. I looked over my shoulder to see that they were catching up with me. I moved my legs faster and faster but those creatures seemed to be faster anyway. Megan was far out of sight by now and I had no idea what to do. My heart was pounding so fast I thought it could break out of my chest any minute now. My muscles started to get sore but the adrenaline kept me going.
I was out of breath and decided to give up just as the ground started to move again. I fell flat on my stomach and screamed as I had hurt the same wrist again. I cried out in pain but got to my feet again. The zombies were only a few feet away. I started running again but as much as mother nature hated me the ground shook heavily again. I managed to stay steady this time and to my delight the creatures that followed me didn't. I ran and ran but the last quake was so hard it was impossible to keep standing. I fell once again and bumped my head against the concrete. The last thing I remember before everything went dark were two people running towards me and the terrible screech of the creatures coming dangerously close.
