Chapter 8 - Please join us

Me and Thomas had been talking for quite a while now and we decided it was time to get back to the others. My wrist hurt a lot but I was okay. I knew it would get better eventually.

I have gotten to know Thomas a lot better now. He was 34 and a Professor at university. He was doing a lot of scientific research and was quite known for that. But he was a doctor of education, that's why he knew how to deal with my wrist and X-ray scanners. Since he was so busy with his job he didn't really have any family or friends, just the people he worked with.

I've told him a lot about myself as well. About Alfie, Louise and my family. I also talked about Megan and how we didn't know if we could trust her. Jim and Poppy were also a subject I rambled a lot about. It felt good to talk to somebody about it. He was a good listener. He knew when to nod and when to just look at me. Yes, that mattered.

"Do you think you're ready to go?" Thomas asked me concerned.

"Yes," I said. "I want to go to London."

"London?" Thomas questioned while standing up and help me to stand up as well.

"Alfie's there."

"I see," he answered. I didn't know if he found it a good idea or not. He opened the door for me and I immediately got bombarded with questions.

"Are you okay?" "What did he do to you?" "Why didn't you let us in?"

"Guys!" I tried to calm them down. "I'm fine! I just needed to rest a little while before we could get away."

"Let's go," Megan said and she walked off. We all followed her, excluding Thomas. I stopped at once and turned around.

"Aren't you coming with us?" I asked sad. I really wanted a positive vibe for our group. I really wanted Thomas in our group.

"The hospital is my home, Zoe," he said. In the mean time the others had turned back as well.

"What's the matter?" Megan asked.

"Please come with us," I begged.

"Yeah, we could use a doctor around," Jim said.

"Depends on what your plan is," Thomas replied.

"We're going to keep moving," Megan said. "It's dangerous to stay in the same place too long. But let's discuss this outside please, I can't stand the smell. How do you deal with this, Thomas?"

Thomas shrugged. "Got used to it I suppose."

Megan nodded and turned back around to go outside.

"The shortest way out is actually this way," Thomas said while pointing to the other side of the hallway.

"Sure," Megan said annoyed. She turned back and made her way out quickly.

After half an hour we had decided to make our way to London. For the first time in days I was actually excited about something. If we made it to London safely, we might be able to find Alfie and my brother.

Thomas had found a few backpacks and a lot of food and water that we could now easily carry with us. I wanted to carry a backpack as well but they all refused. The only problem we had now was that we didn't really have anything to navigate our way to London. The only thing we knew was that we had to head north. But how do you find north when there is no sun?

Megan, who obviously knew, or at least thought she knew, most about it decided to walk in the front. Poppy followed her steps closely. Jim, Thomas and I were  walking behind her. Thomas had decided to join us so we would get a better chance in making it there alive. Let's be honest: without a doctor we would be kind of lost.

"Can I have a word with you alone, Zoe?" Jim asked when we were walking on a high way. Thomas didn't mind and just quickened his step so he was with Poppy and Megan.

"What's wrong?" I asked unable to hide the worry in my voice.

"What happened when he fixed your wrist? Did he brainwash you?"

What the hell was he talking about? "Huh?" I asked not understanding what he meant.

"You went in with the thought he might want to kill you and when you came back you were all over him. You do know you have a boyfriend right?"

"What are you saying?" I snapped at him. I could see Megan give me a worried look. I gestured her that she could just continue walking.

"I'm sorry," he apologized.

"It's okay," I said only to make him feel better. I walked faster to catch up with the others and let Jim be his grumpy self again. I shoved Megan a little aside so I was now walking between Megan and Poppy.

"Are you okay?" I asked Poppy who since the attack of the two zombies almost hadn't said a word.

"I'm fine," she said but I didn't believe her at all. She was so pale... I walked back over to Thomas and whispered in his ear: "Keep an eye on Poppy, I think she's ill."

"Sure," he said smiling. When I looked over my shoulder I could see Jim shooting daggers at Thomas.
