"Along this road
Goes no one,
This autumn eve"
—Basho, 1694

Mazu was known to be a fickle child. Fickleness is a trait that fueled their unmotivated nature throughout their childhood. With their parents lenient methods of raising them, it had brought about a certain kind of naïveté, something that retained until their adulthood. Young Mazu lived life as if they were a breeze on a hot summer day, mostly spending their time by the beach—catching crabs along the coastline and napping under spruce trees. Times were simpler back then, living near the edge of a cliff, one can overlook the vast sea ahead—a picture of idyllic bliss. For Mazu, this was enough.

Though as things would have had it, a single incident could completely change the course of the tides and unfortunately, Mazu carries the brunt of what had transpired. Even when centuries had pass between life and death, Mazu could still picture the day it happened—a clear shade of vermillion that bled across the horizon, the sea reflecting its intense hue. Now, a sunset is a reminder of their faults, it is as though they are reliving the same memory.
