I celebrate my first night in Paris by sleeping in. I wasn't even that tired yesterday, it just felt right to sleep in on this day. Maybe because it's officially my first day of school tomorrow, or just because I feel like it, or maybe both. I only awoke when I heard a screech from downstairs.
"Y/N! WAKE UP! YOU'RE GOING TO MISS IT" Miss what? Miss school? Was it today? I take a quick look at my phones display. If school is today, then I'm screwed. 2 hours late to be exact. Damn it.
"DID YOU HEAR ME?" Yes, mom.
"I'M COMING" I shout back, wondering what's so important. With a big yawn I get out of bed and take my first steps of the day. I practically run out of my bedroom and down the stairs and I see my mom outside the window. I walk outside to see... Well, just my mom. Nothing else. Nothing important at least.
"What's up?" I say, trying to hide my irritation from being woken up for nothing.
She just seems dumbfounded.
"I- ehm... But I just... just saw it.." She is waving fanatically with her hands trying to explain what she just saw. She's acting weird, more than usual.
"What did you see?" I say with a yawn."There was like, this thing and... and...."
"And what?" I sound more irritated than I actually am, I notice that when moms shoulders slumps back, trying to curl up into a little ball, terrified of confrontation. I give her a small pat on the back.
"What happened?"
"Well.. I don't really know what happened" She looks up at the sky "I heard loud bangs and people screaming, which woke me up, gosh you really sleep through anything don't you?"
"Never mind.... That" I say in embarrassment. "And then?""I saw a girl, I think... Up in the air, swinging with a yo-yo" I try to hinder a laughter but a little snicker comes out, but mom doesn't care. She also grins. "Yea, that doesn't sound very real" She puts an arm around me and begins to lead me inside. "I think I forgot my meds, back in Portland. The migraine ones"
There were often times that she saw things when nobody else saw them. It all started after dad died. The doctor said the stress and the migraines from the accident made her see things. After she took the meds everything became alright. Except the DAMN medical bills!
"I'll have to go to the doctor to get new meds" She chuckles a bit and begins putting on her brown cowboy-like boots. This is the perfect time to go to Marinettes house and give her clothes back.
"You're gonna get the meds now? I'm not even dressed, I can't go out like this!" I say, pointing at my pajamas.
"Calm down, Y/N" She stops in her steps. "I'll be gone for just 20 minutes, max. It's down the street and just around the corner. Just go back to sleep if you want to"
"I'm not that tired" I put my hands up defensively.
"Yeah right" Ignoring her disrespect towards me, I continue."I'm just gonna run up and get dressed. Wait for me!" I hear a sigh as I run up the stairs. I know I'm being annoying and she has every right to leave. But I know she'll wait. Probably.
I look around my room for clean clothes. I look at the top of my chair. Marinettes clothes. Neatly folded. Clean. Just where I put the yesterday. They were nice to wear. But not today. I'm going to give them back.
I dig around in my drawers to find something whole and clean.
I pick up Marinettes clothes and puts them inside a fancy paper bag that I got from an amusement park.I run downstairs and see my mom mindlessly scrolling on her phone. She quickly puts the phone back in her pocket when she sees me.
"Ready to go?"
"Always ready"The first thing I hear when is the birds chirping. And then the traffic. How nice.
Mom seems to be in a good mood and has a little skip in her walk.
"What's with the bag?"
"I was thinking, that I'll give the clothes back to Marinette when you're at the pharmacy"
"Aren't you gonna keep them?" She asks, confused.
"No? Why" She smiles and stares into space aimlessly.
"No reason" She chuckles. I chuckle too, no idea why but I do it.Just a couple of minutes later I'm outside the "Tom & Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie" Mom says goodbye and continues on her way to the pharmacy.
I take a deep breath and goes inside. A smell of baked bread hits my nose when I get inside. Gosh, that smells awesome...
Mr Dupain is at the desk writing something down and is in his own thought.
"Hi, Mr Dupain!" He looks up and greets me with a warm smile.
"Hello Y/N, How's your mother?"
"The same as yesterday""Right.. Well what can I do for you?" He puts away his pen.
"Is Marinette home?" I notice him smile and slightly shakes his head.
"Yes, she's upstairs"
"Thank you!" I power walk all the way to the ladder to her room. Before I open the door I can hear her talking. Loud whispers. I can't hear exactly what she says but she seems agitated and something about "Tikki"? I knock on the trapdoor. The whisper disappears and it goes quiet for a while. I knock again, a little harder.
"Hello? Marinette? You okay?" No answers.
"Can I open the door? My arms are getting tired!" I awkwardly chuckle a bit. But it's not a joke, I really am start to loose grip of the ladder. And I'm starting to get desperate. It's hard holding both a ladder and a chunky paper bag."Ehh... Come in" I open the trap door and climbs up the ladder. She helps me up the rest of the way holding my hand.
"Sorry I was..." She looks nervous and stammers a bit while she pulls me up.
"It's fine" I give her a big smile and she smiles back looking at the floor.
"I gotta ask, who were you talking to?" She looks up and her eyes widen.
"No one!" Huh, there's something up with her.
"Okay... I brought your clothes. I didn't have time to wash them but the clothes are clean and whole"
"Oh, thank you Y/N" She takes the bag. "You didn't have to, I never use them anymore, since.... The accident..." She says with sinister look in her eyes.
"Excuse me?"
"I'm just kidding" She giggles while looking at me.
"Oh"
"But seriously, you can keep the clothes" She beams and puts the bag back in my hands.
"I'm not..." I begin.
"It's fine, and it suits you"
"Oh, heh. Thanks" I look down at the floor. I don't know what to say.I hear a knock from the trapdoor and it opens up. Mr Dupain.
"Your mom is here, Y/N" I begin to walk towards the door but Marinette stops me.
"She'll be there!"
"Alright" He closes the door and we're once again alone."Can we go somewhere after school tomorrow?" She says squarely.
"Sure, I mean if you want to"
"Of course I want to"
"Then sure" She stills holds my hand after she stopped me and I shake it. Her recognizing that we are still holding my hand makes her drop my hand.
"See you" I say and she just nods back. I walk down the ladder with the bag in my hand. The whisper that I heard when I came here seems to come back. I try to listen a bit but I can't hear anything, just small whispers. Oh wellI see my mom talking to Mr Dupain and Mrs Cheng. Once again. She holds a little bag in her hand, probably from the pharmacy. She looks up to me.
"Ready to go?"
"Yes"
We say our goodbyes and begin to walk home, just like yesterday.Mom notice that I still have the bag in my hand and tilta her head a bit.
"She gave you back the bag?"
"She let me keep the clothes"
"How nice"
"She is" I grin at mom and she grins back. For the rest of the day, I just sit around trying to gain enough energy for school tomorrow.
"You know that you're going to be in the same class as Marinette"
"I figured" I answer.
"It's good that you've already got a... friend" She snickers. "You'll feel more at home" I only answer back with a humming noice. Acknowledging that I feel exactly the same way.
