It was strange, he decided. Lincoln never expected to get an invitation to Daisy's wedding. Being her ex and all. Yet when everyone in their friend group started talking about getting invitations, there his was in the mailbox of the apartment they used to share. They had talked about getting a house and the future. Now she was getting married to another man. Everyone had asked if he was going to go and he barely mustered up enough courage to say yes. How was he actually supposed to put on a suit and go watch the woman he still loved marry another man?
When they broke up their friends wanted to know what went wrong. Daisy and Lincoln decided on the vague falling out of love speech. In reality, their lives were going in different directions and they didn't fit like they used to. Daisy's sister Kora couldn't understand most. She didn't believe that after almost ten years of being together that they fell out of love. Lincoln wondered if Daisy ever told her the true story because the calls from Kora eventually stopped.
Now that the day was finally here, he mustered up every drop of courage he had and put on the suit. Daisy wanted him at the wedding or she wouldn't have sent an invitation so he was going to be there.
When the invitation arrived in the mail Lincoln didn't look at where the wedding was. It was further than he expected and he really didn't want to be late. Luckily for him, he arrived just in time, even if he had to run a few yellow lights to get there. Lincoln was surprised to see the wedding was at a church. Daisy had said many times that she never wanted to get married in a church. Maybe a lot had changed in three years.
Everyone he knew was already in the church on the bride's side. He didn't know anyone on the groom's side so he was happy to see familiar faces. They all seemed surprised he actually came but he wanted to support Daisy and for her to be happy even if it wasn't with him.
Hunter and Bobbi were the first to come and talk to him. They had supported him the most after the break up along with Deke. Jemma was Daisy's best friend so it made sense she would go to her first. Everyone had started to sit as the wedding was beginning soon. Lincoln had chosen to sit near the back for a quick exit.
The music started to play softly and the groom made his way to the altar. Following him was the wedding party and he could have sworn that Kora's eyes grew wide when she saw him. Everyone started to stand once the ring bearer and flower girls came down. Lincoln couldn't even recognize Daisy. She had always said she didn't want a traditional wedding dress or a long veil. She wanted her wedding to be fun and not traditional. Everything about this wedding screamed not Daisy, but he wouldn't ruin her day. The crowd sat down as she stood at the altar. The vows were short and at that point, Lincoln didn't know if he could sit there anymore. He had already put on a brave face coming to the wedding and talking with everyone, but he couldn't watch her get married. He was also too embarrassed to get up and leave.
The groom had slipped the ring onto Daisy's finger after repeating what the officiant said. Lincoln decided embarrassment was better than watching this. He started to get up to leave as Daisy repeated after the officiant.
"Daisy repeat after me. I, Daisy, take thee, Daniel." The officiant said.
"I, Daisy, take thee Lincoln-" A few gasps erupted from the audience.
"Daniel, um I meant Daniel." She laughed nervously. Lincoln stopped and turned around to look at the scene. Daisy pulled away from Daniel and started to rub her hands together nervously. He had seen her do this enough times to know she was panicking. She started to rub her hands on her dress and looked around the crowd.
Daisy scanned the crowd and then saw him. Lincoln stood by the door looking just as surprised as she felt. Still, she couldn't believe he actually came.
"Should we continue?" The officiant asked, looking between Daisy and Daniel.
"Yes let's continue-" Daniel started to say but Daisy interrupted. "No. No stop, I can't do this."
The crowd started whispering and Daisy took off the ring to hand back to Daniel. "I'm sorry, but I'm in love with someone else."
"I'm sorry." She would whisper staring into his eyes.
"Me too, go." He would try to smile back at her.
Daisy would gather her skirt and start to run back up the aisle to Lincoln. The crowd would look around and start to talk. Daniel's family and friends got up to comfort him. Kora joined Daisy's friends "I knew she wouldn't go through with it."
"Really? I thought they were happy." Jemma would frown a little and watch Daisy talk with Lincoln.
Kora would roll her eyes "Sure she loved Daniel a little but not as she did with Lincoln. I lived with her long enough and heard enough times how she thought he was the one. I just hope he still has the ring."
"Ring?" Mack would ask with wide eyes.
"Right before they broke up, Lincoln asked us if he could marry her. He had the ring and everything. I still don't know why they broke up but Daisy didn't know he was going to propose."
"Well maybe now he'll get the chance, you think we'll still get cake?" Hunter would ask and get a slap on the head from Bobbi.
They would watch a little longer as everyone started to leave, Daisy and Lincoln would be sitting and talking about everything that had happened. The group would start to disperse and head to their cars. Daisy's parents had decided to go home and smiled as they watched Daisy and Lincoln.
"You owe me 50 bucks." May would whisper.
Coulson would roll his eyes and take out his wallet "I should have known, you're always right."
"We should go, Kora will be there for her. She was their number one fan." May would take his hand as they left the church.
Kora stayed and waited for them. She stayed through the tears, the I love you's, and finally when Daisy was ready to change and get out of the church. Lincoln waited in the parking lot while they went back and cleaned their stuff up. Kora packed up Daisy's dress, veil, and shoes while she changed. Daisy sat in one of the chairs watching Kora clean everything up.
"Why did you invite him?" She asked out of the blue. Kora turned to look at her slightly confused.
"What are you talking about?" Kora laughed a little, still packing everything up.
Daisy narrowed her eyes at her sister "I know you put Lincoln on the invite list because I didn't and I highly doubt Daniel did. So why did you do it?"
Daisy waited for an answer and Kora stopped cleaning and sat beside her. "Because I couldn't watch you marry someone you didn't love. At least not the way you loved Lincoln. I knew you wouldn't have been happy with Daniel and mom and dad lied about him asking. They didn't even know he was going to propose and I knew how important that was to you. To have their blessing, they liked Daniel and sure it took them a while to warm up to Lincoln but they respected him for loving you and wanting to always be there for you. Daniel can't give you what Lincoln already had."
Kora smiled and kissed her head before taking everything outside, leaving Daisy with her thoughts. She stayed there for a few more minutes before quickly getting up and running out of the church. Her eyes scanned the parking lot for Lincoln. She saw him leaning against his car holding his jacket in one hand. Daisy ran over to him and jumped into his arms kissing him soundly.
"I'm sorry for everything I said, everything that happened-" Daisy started to ramble once they broke apart.
"It wasn't your fault, the things I said. You deserved better, you still do." Lincoln would say.
Daisy shook her head and kept her arms wrapped around him "You're it Linc, I can't imagine a life where I'm happy without you."
He pressed his forehead against hers "I love you."
She would smile and quickly kiss him again "I love you too, now let's go home."
