"I'm sorry to inform you, sir, but it seems like the traffic is not going to move anytime soon. An accident has occurred on the highway. The police won't allow anyone to go through."
"I understand, Dominic. Please let me know if the situation changes and you manage to find a way off the highway," the middle-aged man replied with a heavy sigh, attempting to hide the irritation in his voice.
"Will do, sir."
Matthew then stuffed his phone into his coat pocket as soon as the call ended. Rubbing his hands, he considered his next actions as he waited for his chauffeur to arrive, which wasn't going to be for a while it seemed. His palms were sweating due to the summer heat and the unnecessary amount of fabric attached to his body.
His mood had soured completely after that phone call. Mostly because of the unfortunate circumstances he was in, stuck waiting for his chauffeur for God knows how long, but also because he had left his son, Phoenix, alone at home for a couple of months again. And he also hadn't managed to buy him a souvenir from his travels.
He was initially planning to buy something expensive for him before making his way back to the airport. Still, due to the unpredictable occurrence, Matthew would not have been able to get what he wanted for his son unless he wanted to miss his flight entirely.
Every time he went on a business trip, he would take back something for Phoenix, whether it was a plain book or an expensive clothing brand. Despite his son's protests, he insisted on bringing something each time he went away. Unfortunately, he had been unable to get him anything this time with how occupied he had been with work.
Since the car wasn't going to arrive any time soon, he decided to wander the city. He hadn't gotten much of a chance to do so earlier and right now was a perfect opportunity to get his son a gift even if it was small.
The older man passed by antique shops, Louis Vuitton stores, beautiful coffee shops, and even a Barnes and Noble that had recently opened that week. However, he didn't enter any of the places because none of them had anything he thought Phoenix would like-or what he assumed he would like - or that caught his interest.
Half an hour later, Matthew could no longer recognize where he was. He was surrounded by run-down buildings and rubble for roads. He took out his phone to check his location but before he could, something shone out of the corner of his eye.
