First Gifts

"I'll see you tomorrow." I say walking up the porch of my house.

"See ya!" Kellie yells from the sidewalk.

I unlock the door with a key hidden under the rug I place the key back under the rug and go into the house, dropping my bag on the the floor. I pick up the mail from the floor and look through the stack as I walk to the kitchen. Bill, bill, bill, my moms Woman's Day magazine, bill, and a pink envelope for me. I fill a glass of water and take a sip, then I take a card out of the envelope. Happy Valentines Day! I read the cover. I open up the card and read the beautiful cursive handwriting. You don't know me, but I know you. You are pretty, smart, and I want you to know I care about you. I hope I can reveal my identity to you some day. Love, Your Admirer. I smirk at the card and finish my water. I put my cup in the sink and run up the stairs to my room. I change into sweat pants and a blue t-shirt before wandering back downstairs. I pick up my bag, sitting on the floor where I left it. I go back to the kitchen and spread my homework out on the island.

"Hope, I'm home!" My mom calls from the front door.

"I'm in the kitchen!" I yell.

My mom's shoes thud through the hallway and she appears in the kitchen. She is holding three plastic grocery bags and sits them on the counter with her purse and house keys.

"How was your day?" She asks walking back down the hallway to take off her shoes and jacket.

"Good, guess what I got in the mail." I say.

"A new magazine?" She guesses. "Because you surely don't have enough after twelve different subscriptions."

I ignore her comment. "I got a Valentine's Card from a secret admire."I say.

"Oh, maybe you'll have a date to the Valentine's dance." She says putting and apron on.

"Well, I already got asked by Tod, Kevin, and Damion." I say.

"Wow, who did you tell yes?" My mom asks curiously.

"Tod! Mom, I have been waiting for Tod to ask me out for two months." I say.

"Okay, so I guess you're going to have to forget the secret admire." My mom says pulling food out of the cupboards and starting supper.

"Well, I would at least like to know who it is...in the card...he said I don't know him. It was actually a little freaky if you ask me." I say.

"Well, if he starts to make you uncomfortable, just ignore him." She says.

I work on my homework for about a half and hour and the door bell rings.

"I'll get it." I say getting up from my stool and walking to the door. I open up the door to find no one standing there, but a vase of colorful flowers sits on the porch. I look around outside to see if anyone is around but no one is in sight. I pick up the vase and walk back to the kitchen.

"Who was it?" My mom asks, not turning to look at me.

"Oh no one, literally." I sit the flowers down on the counter.

"Oh my...he really likes you." My mom teases.

I pull a note out of the flowers and read it. I hope you got my card, this is part of my gift to you. Happy Valentine's Day!

"Well, this is getting a little creepy." I say putting the note back.

"Just go with it for a while, make it fun. Oh by the way, your father and I have a dinner party tomorrow night." My mom says.

"Can I have Kellie and Siphanie over and go out for awhile?" I ask.

"Sure, but follow the rules." My mom says.

"I will."

"Okay, supper is almost ready."

"Kay, I'll be right back." I pick up my homework and put it back in my bag and take it upstairs. When I go back downstairs, I can smell supper lingering in the air.

"Chicken and mashed potatoes." My mom says dipping her plate.

"Yummy!" I dip my plate and sit at the island with my mom.

I hear the front door open up and seconds later, it closes. My dad and younger sister come into the kitchen.

"Hey guys." My sister says dipping her plate.

"Heather, I wasn't expecting you to come home yet." My mom says.

"Swimming practice ended early, so dad picked my up on his way home." Heather explains.

"Oh, why did it end early?" My mom asks getting up to hug and kiss my dad hello.

"The coach had to leave for a family emergency." She says sitting at the kitchen table.

"How was your day, honey?" My mom pecks my dad's lips and sits back down.

"Good, don't forget about our dinner tomorrow."

My phone beeps and I check it. "I'll be in my room." I say and go to my room.

I go to my closet and look through my clothes. I pick out a pair of light denim shorts and a black tube top with chiffon ruffle at the top. I lay the clothes on my bed and go take a shower.
