Samantha {5}Mama didn't usually let me wear dresses except on Sundays, but I convinced her to let me wear one for the first day of school. Abigail had told me all about the new dress her mama had got her for school and how she had new shoes and a bow to match. I didn't really like bows, or really anything that goes in hair. It just gets stuck in the curls or falls out or gets lost. Usually lost. But Mama said if I was gonna wear a dress, I may as well have the hair to match, so she pulled and pulled until my curls were piled on the top of my head that she pinched with a million bobby pins.
One of the top curls was already falling out and bouncing in front of my face when Mama pulled up outside the school. I saw Abigail getting out of her Daddy's truck a few cars in front of us, and there were a lot of my Sunday school friends on the playground already. I saw a lot of kids I didn't know, too.
Suddenly nervous, I swallowed and looked to Mama in the rearview mirror.
"You gonna be all right without me?" I asked Mama because she'd never had to go to work without me.
She smiled at me and reached across the car to pat my foot while I unbuckled my carseat.
"Today is going to be great." Mama said, and I hugged her because she always knows what to say. I opened the door and hopped down onto the pavement. Grabbing my backpack from the floorboard, Mama said, "Don't forget your ma'ams and sirs. I love you! Can't wait for you to tell me all about it!" I grinned and blew her a kiss. She caught it. I shut the door and turned to face my new classmates.
"Samantha!" Abigail yelled and ran towards me.
"Abigail!!" I returned and met her halfway, hugging her and screaming and jumping around. I hadn't seen her since her birthday party a few weeks ago. We'd both spent the afternoon eating cake and drinking lemonade and thinking about how exciting it was now that we were finally five years old--old enough to go to the big kids school. I knew it would be the best thing ever.
"Come on!!! Let's go find Ollie!!!" Abigail grabbed my hand and with flying hair sticking to our faces and sticky grins on our mouths we skipped off in search of Abigail's soulmate (he gave her a daisy after the last day of the carnival and kissed her on the cheek!!!!)

Luke {6}
My older brother Landon told me school was the hardest thing Mom and Dad ever made him do, but at least he met his friends there. I told him I wished he could go with me, but he explained that he's at the bigger kid's middle school across the street. Being older is always better. I can't wait until I catch up to Landon and we can be in the same class!
I'm close, already. I'm six, and most of the kids in Miss Handle's kindergarten class were only five!
I forgot that most days, though. Mom made sure I got put in a class with Hallie and Grayson, my friends that lived on my street. This way I wouldn't have to be worried about all the other kids because I wouldn't be alone! The other kids were cool, too. I really liked the boy at my table named Oliver. He always wore dinosaur shirts and brought trucks for show and tell. Sometimes he and I played together and built giant block cities that had to be destroyed by the trucks if we finished our work early. Not all the time, though, he switched between playing with me and Grayson by playing with another girl, Abigail, on some days. I didn't mind. Our class was pretty good about being friends with everyone.
And when I got home I could always play with Grayson or Hallie. Hallie didn't like the dirt so much, but that was okay! When she came over I knew how to make chicken nuggets and we'd share a plate and watch Big Hero 6!
