George didn't expect this. He knew about Dream's powers, of course. He always knew about them since he confided in George when they were kids. Dream was scared, he didn't know why what was happening was happening. George had calmed Dream down back then, and held him in his arms until his breathing stilled and the tears stopped.
But now George fears he shouldn't have done that. Dream has gotten too powerful and everybody on this server knows it. Dream has lost control over his powers and George is afraid he's lost control of his mind too.
So, when Dream comes home that day with Tubbo's blood on his armor, George is not surprised.
"I did it again," Dream confesses and seemingly can't even look at George. Those hazel eyes do not meet George's brown ones. "I made somebody kill. Again."
George finds himself wrapping his arms around Dream and his bloody armor. Dream sinks into the embrace, wanting to stay in this warmth and comfort.
"I'm sorry," Dream murmurs and clings onto George and his mossy cape. George and his brown hair. George and his blue shirt and George with his mushroom hat and sunglasses. George.
"You'll be alright," George says, although he knows it's a lie. Now that he's done it again, people will know. People will come for him. Sam will send him to prison.
But it's worth it to try to prevent it.
"Dream, we need to go," George pulls away from the hug and holds Dream by his shoulders. "I think we both know that people will come for you."
"I'll go alone," Dream decides and walks to another section of the kingdom, out of George's house. George is quick to follow.
"You can't do this alone!" He protests and grabs Dream's shoulder to spin him around. "I can come with you."
"You can't," Dream places a hand on George's that rests on his shoulder. "I don't want to bring you into this. It's my fault. You don't deserve to be in a mess that isn't yours to be in."
"It is mine to be in, I can handle it!"
"If you weren't so stubborn you could see why you can't come!" Dream shouts and throws his arms out. His patience is wearing thin.
"Well then, why don't you make me leave?" George takes a step forward and looks up at Dream. He wants to appear non threatened but the nervous swallow proves otherwise.
"No," Dream nods stiffly, "You can leave yourself. I won't control you."
Dream is proving to be annoyed with his tense jaw and the tongue in his cheek. His brows furrow together in frustration.
"Do it," George takes another step forward, having to crane his neck upwards. "Control me, do it. If you're so irritated then just make me."
"No," Dream repeats and takes a step back. "I can't do that. I won't do that."
"Why not? If you can make somebody kill another, you can make me leave you alone," George shrugs, his neck beginning to ache.
"That's not fair," Dream says and lets out a breath he was unaware he was holding. "You know that I struggle controlling myself, George."
George's shoulders tense as he swallows nervously. That was wrong of him to say, and they both know that pretty well. George holds a breath and opens his mouth to speak and closes it again.
"You're right, that wasn't fair of me." George finally admits and releases the breath, his shoulders relaxing as he does. "Sorry." He lets himself look down as his neck begins to ache.
"George, I really do have to leave," Dream's shoulders relax, and his expression is back to the soft one only George knows so well.
"I know," George murmurs, "Can I at least help you get ready?"
"Yeah," Dream nods and the two head off to a small shack full of supplies.
The two pack in silence, allowing the warmth of the room to sink in. George would do anything to make sure Dream didn't leave so soon. He wants Dream to stay, but he knows he can't. He would like to hold Dream like this in his arms forever.
But, he can't. They both know they can't as much as they would like to.
"Goodbye, George," Dream sighs and places a gentle kiss on the top of his head. He lets himself breathe in the smell of him one last time.
"Goodbye," George replies in a murmur and watches as the other walks away.
He stands and watches as Dream disappears from his field of vision. He would do anything to run after him, to hold him one more time. It's never enough. It's never going to be enough hugs, and it will never be enough running. Dream would leave forever, and although he makes it seem like he will be back, they both know he won't.
Dream will no longer be in George's life, as much as they both would like him to be.
