I sat outside the empty college classroom waiting, and humming the melody to End Of The World by REM. Class started at 8 but the nerves kicked in just about 5 in the morning. From 5 to 7:25 I had smoked 4 cigarettes, taken 4 laps around my dorm and around the class building and spastically called my girlfriend, Mags.
-Call me again? I texted. I knew she was off the bus by now and walking to school starting her senior year while I start as freshman at NYU. My phone rang for a few seconds before I picked up.
"How you holding up?" She asked.
"I'm good,"
"Liar. My phone is just seeping with angst." She retorted.
"Kinda." I admitted. "Wanna do something for me?"
"Sure..."
"Describe everything you see while your walking before you get to fairview." I asked.
"Odd request but ok. I'm walking, I'm walking." She said. "I just passed by the bench that was replaced last week. I am looking at that one fire hydrant that you and Georgie "accidentally" broke freshman year. I just passed the cracks we always used to step on when you and your mom had a arguments and now I'm at the front of Fairview."
"I miss you."
"It's only been a week, Mac. Come visit on Saturday or something." She protested.
"I guess."
"Don't stress, I promise it'll be okay." Mags had a caring side to her that I enjoyed a lot. It made me feel whole and good about everything.
"Are you gonna hang up now?"
"I'm just about to, once Howie gets here so we can get to pick good seats for A/V class."
"I love you." I think.
"I love you too." She meant it.
