I awoke with a yawn, it was still dark outside but the skies were already clearing up. It's been 7 months since the candle had almost went out and the Casita was rebuilt and my Abuela was less rigid, Isabela was still figuring herself out, Luisa has gone back to being the strong independent woman she was, Antonio was good, we were all closer than ever. I decide to just get up from my bed and do stuff before everyone else woke up, I start to get ready for my day with the assistance of the Casita. I begin my day by carrying out my chores, it wasn't an assigned chore, the Casita could do it all, I just liked to help because I feel less useless when I do it, I've come to terms with being the only Madrigal descendant without a gift but sometimes I can't help but feel down, Mom says I shouldn't beat myself up about it and that the candle knows why he didn't give me one, because without me, they probably would have been wallowing in self-pity about losing their powers instead of thinking of a solution, she even said my power was my super brain.
"Mirabel, why are you up so early?" I hear Dolores say as she yawns,
"Sorry, did I wake you up? I tried to be as quiet as possible" I whisper as I set the last plate down,
"Did sound like you were Mirabel" She replies with sass as she walks towards the table and the casita draws out a chair for her and she slumps onto the chair,
"Not my fault you have super hearing," I sass right back, she just snorts quietly at this,
"What are you girls doing up?" Abuela's voice has us spinning around,
"So much for super hearing" I whisper to Dolores,
"My mind was occupied," She whisper yell back at me,
"Abuela, I woke up early and just decided to assist the Casita in setting the table," I say to Abuela,
"You thought you should wake the whole house too while at it, right?" Abuela scolds as she walks towards us,
"I....sorry Abuela I...." I was apologizing but was cut off by Dolores,
"Cut it out Camilo," Dolores says as her head slumps onto the table,
"Camilo?" I question looking at Abuela and she poofs into Camilo,
"What gave it away?" Camilo asks as he sits beside Dolores,
"Your lead with your left foot, Abuela walks leading with her right foot" Dolores mumbles,
We all seat in comfortable silence, I don't know how long we sat there for but the sun had already broken out of the sky and everywhere was bright.
"What are you guys doing?" Antonio asks,
"We're having a meeting for grown up Madrigal children, you shouldn't be here," Camilo says,
"You're not so grown up Camilo, stop getting ahead of yourself," Antonio replies innocently but it was a burn regardless and we all burst out laughing
"What's so funny?" Luisa asks as she walks towards us,
"Antonio told Camilo he isn't a grown up and that he should stop getting ahead of himself," I repeat trying to hold my laughter back,
"But he really isn't," Antonio argues,
"Wow," Luisa says laughing; we all burst into laughter again,
I see my mum walk to the kitchen to start preparing breakfast, so I follow along to assist her and we all had breakfast with the usual family banter not missing. After breakfast we all wander into the village, I see Luisa assisting some of the villagers like she always does, I wander around some more and see Dolores laughing at something Mariano was telling her, those two had really gotten close, seems Abuela would finally have that wedding she wanted between the Madrigals and the Guzmans.
"Mirrrraaaabbbbeeeelllll" I hear Antonio shout and I step out of the ways just fast enough as he zooms past me riding a tiger and a fleet of animals and birds after him,
"Antonio that was too close" I shout after him laughing,
As I turn around to continue my part towards the lake that I and my Abuela had settled our differences I notice the sky was getting darker, my aunt Pepa was probably throwing a fit, I just continue walking until I reach the late and I sit on the rock I always use as my seat as I get lost in thoughts while painting the beautiful scene in front of me. It had been a couple of hours of me sitting there lost in thoughts as I painted, I didn't realize the rumbling in the water, or how dark it was getting, it was when the wind started becoming unruly that I realize that a heavy storm was about to happen.
"Aunt PEPA!!!" I yell as I hurriedly pack my stuff and hurry home and then I run into Camilo,
"Where have you been? We've been looking all over for you," Camilo says as he grabs my hand and drags me along,
"What's happening? Who made Aunt Pepa so crossed?" I ask as I hurry to keep up with him,
"It's not Aunt Pepa," Camilo says
I look around and notice Luisa and others telling people to go into their houses, Abuela was giving orders and telling everybody to stay safe.
"Abuela what's going on?" I ask as we get close to them,
"I don't know, it isn't your aunt Pepa and she can't control it either, something's off, I can feel it," Abuela says
"Where's Antonio?" I ask,
"He's right here," Aunt Pepa says as she walks towards us, shielding her eyes, Antonio behind her,
A loud bolt of lightning strikes a tree nearby as thunder continues to rumble loudly.
"We should all head inside," I say nervously,
We all head towards the Casita when we were sure everybody were safely inside, at this point sand grains were moving in the wind and there was literally a sand storm, as we near the Casita we see the door open and we all enter and we meet the rest that weren't outside.
"Something is wrong," My dad says,
"You think we can't tell? We were outside," Camilo says sarcastically,
"What's going on?" I whisper, trying to understand what's happening,
"I don't know... but could it have something to do with the new door upstairs," Tio Felix says,
"A new door?" We all literally scream,
"Yes a new door," My mom repeats,
We all hurry upstairs and beside Antonio's door is another glowing door, just like it appears before bestowing its gift on the Madrigal that had just come of age.
"But we don't have anybody that just came of age," Isabela says,
"Thanks for pointing out the obvious Sherlock," Camilo says,
"I don't see how your sarcasm is of help right now Camilo," I say,
"Sorry, it comes out when I'm stressed," Camilo says,
"Abuela," I say and we all turn to face my Abuela,
"It shouldn't be here," Abuela said,
"There's no young Madrigal," Luisa says,
"So why is it there?" I say and we all turn to look at the door,
"Could it be that the Casita is giving Mirabel a door because she helped rebuild it?" Dolores says and they all look at me,
"No," I say and walk to my room and shut my door, quickly rolling under my bed,
"Mirabel," I hear my mum call after me as she follows me into my room,
"I can't Ma, I don't want to get my hopes up," I mumble from under my bed when I hear her open my door and walk in,
"It wouldn't hurt to try Mirabel, even if it doesn't open you're still gonna be your amazing self," I hear her say, so I roll out from under the bed,
"If it doesn't open up for you then we'll know we have to figure out something else," Tio Bruno says and I look up and see everyone at my doorway,
I stand up and nod as I rub out imaginary wrinkles in my skirt and they all part a way for me, I lead the way to the new door, I pause as I take a breath before reaching for the door knob. The door shines brighter as I turn the knob but it subsides and the door doesn't open.
"I knew it," I say sadly and I feel my mum pull me into a hug and I feel everybody else join in the hug,
"It doesn't matter Mirabel," I hear Antonio say, and that lifts my spirit a little,
"So what are we gonna do about this?" Camilo says,
"Bruno," Abuela says,
"On it," Tio Bruno says and walks into his room,
"What is he gonna do?" I say,
"Begin the rituals to get a vision about the door," Abuela says,
