The day of the Hale fire...

Young Naomi ran through the halls of her family's mansion, giggling and blasting the tables with ice as ribbons of purple flew out of her hands while her older brother chased after her.

"Nomi, hey, you can't do that!" He shouted, using her nickname as he tried to grab her little hands, but she just giggled more, slipping away.

It was time for her to get ready for school and most like other 9 year old kids, Naomi hated going to school.

She always tried to get away from it with all her might— but it never worked in her favor.

Although today— today felt different, Naomi didn't know how or why, but it was definitely different. Like there was a stronger reason she needed to stay home.

Nonetheless, her plan failed as her mother, Talia, walked around the corner she was about to run around as her back was turned to Derek and she ran right into her.

"Oh, I'm sorry, momma." She looked up innocently with a soft frown as Derek walked up behind her.

"Well, what's going on here? Why aren't you dressed for school yet?" Talia leaned down to hold the hands of her youngest daughter and give her a small smile of comfort.

"I don't want to go."  Naomi quivered her lip, whining.

She had no real reason to hate school, she got good grades, she had a good friend group and the others knew her fairly well.  The teachers also were quite nice... but she just hated it.  She wanted to stay home with her family.

"Naomi, you have to go, sweetheart. Your education is very important." Talia sighed, "and you know what else is important?"

"What?"  She whispered, knowing that her mother was always right in these situations.

"Using your magic for restoration and healing, not destruction." She raised her eyebrows, giving her a look of acknowledgment.  "Just because you have powers doesn't mean you misuse them, my dear."

"I'm sorry, mom.  I'll fix it."  Naomi frowned, looking at the ground as she turned to the mess she had made, not only from her magic, but from running around and not caring.

There were ice cold vases, rigid to the touch as ice residue remained on them, paintings and pictures on the floor or just generally misplaced, and rugs tossed around all over the wooden floor.

Breathing in through her nose and closing her eyes, while holding out her arms to her sides, as if she was holding an imaginary box, Naomi let the purple swirls flow around her body as she imagined the room just as it was before.

Everything began to lift itself up, slowly until it looked spotless.  There was no more mess, just as it was before, and as Naomi looked over to Derek, she decided he deserved an apology too.

"I'm sorry, I didn't realize how much of a mess I was making.  And you were just trying to help."  She frowned once again, looking up at her teenage brother while lightly tugging on his sleeve as he crouched down and gave her a hug.

"Everyone makes mistakes, but use that magic wisely, little witch."

"Noooo, I'm not a witch."  She whined, stomping her foot.

Naomi hated when people called her a witch, most of the time it was Derek that would do so, but to be fair, she wasn't one, she was much stronger. "Enchantress.  Get it right."

"Woah, okay.  Little enchantress."  He corrected with a smile and small nod.

"Now, I think it's time for you to go get ready." Talia chimed in again, making Naomi sigh in acceptance.

"Okay." She said, beginning to run away from them and up the stairs to her room as her figure gradually disappeared more and more out the hall.

Present day... Naomi's POV

That was the last real conversation I had with my mother. Other than a kiss goodbye and "Have a good day sweetheart," I never got a real goodbye.

Because when I returned back from what I expected to be another normal day of school, Derek, Laura and I walked down to see our house erupted into flames... with our family inside.

Devastation wasn't even a word strong enough to describe the feeling inside of me as we were dragged away from the house, screaming and crying.

I haven't seen my siblings since that dreadful day. They both left Beacon Hills, leaving me to only hope they're okay on whichever journey they take next.

Just to clarify if you've already read this: I'm re-doing the backstory of this book.

Most of this chapter stayed the same, it's mostly just what happened to Naomi after the fire that I'm changing <3

Hope you liked it tho xx
