Chapter One.

October 4, 1943, Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Exactly 13 years have passed since the events in Landkreis. The Zussman family will change Mikasa and make her one more member.

Mikasa was deeply grateful for what they have done for her over the years.

Mikasa became much closer to Zussman. She also forged a lasting friendship with the hero of this unfortunate story. They literally spent time together and shared anything dangerous, they were inseparable.

Mikasa felt comforted by the happiness that she radiated from her, feeling comfortable, besides Zussman's jokes always made her laugh.

Anyway.

Later the news is given that Germany invades Poland and a war is unified in Europe, then escalates to a world war... For the consecutive time the world succumbs in resounding chaos.

Because the Nazis started going after the Jews. The Zussman family had to desert Germany and go into exile in the United States, beginning a totally different life than the one they were used to.

But that was a matter of time, they learned English and attended school normally, but the adaptation process was somewhat hard... More so for Mikasa. Since Mikasa initially received xenophobic and racist comments due to her nationality, it didn't go any further as she became worthy of respect.

As a result of the traumatic event that she experienced. She, that innocent and nightingale girl, would overthrow by having a more cynical and ruthless vision of the harsh reality. The smile that once existed now carpeted pain, only pain in her heart.

But he only had one reason to live, and that was Robert Zussman. His goal was to protect him from all evil.

If I tell you that all that was a challenge... Zussman was a boy who messed up all the time, extremely arrogant... Too much, sarcastic and rebellious. He was not afraid of adversity so he used to get involved in constant trouble.

Robert had enlisted to participate in the war. Nobody knew about that, not even Mikasa. He had been thinking for days about telling her about it, although he was afraid that she would worry and boycott his plans by telling her mom, since she would suffer a lot if she found out about her.

After the US entered World War II, a new selective service law required all men between the ages of 18 and 65 to register for compulsory military service. So Zussman wanted to contribute as well.

He invited Mikasa out on a date, took her to Millennium Park and then they sat down to rest on a bench while eating ice cream. Admiring the view.

"Mikasa" The brunette called quickly drawing Mikasa's watchful gaze on him.

"I will enlist to attend the war" I declare, a sepucral silence harbored. An unknown breeze blew over them, causing their clothes to dance in the wind.

"Me too" She replied after a while the raven hid her gaze in the crimson scarf.

"What?" She frowned and hysteria continues. "No way Mikasa, you stay" She reproached.

Mikasa's sharp gaze lashed out at Zussman's eyes, the aforementioned clearing his throat.

"Mikasa, you don't need to risk your life. The army doesn't take in women." He argues trying to help her reconsider.

"I'll be there to ensure your safety. It's the number one thing for me."
