Early the next morning I woke up to Eros and Luke shuffling around the room. They moved like anonymous, gray statues, but their forms soon revealed in the morning light.
"We're leaving," was all Luke said before disappearing in a cloud of black and white before my eyes. My head hit the pillow once more, my eyes rolling into the back of my head.
The next time I woke up, I was feeling a bit more alert, and was surprised at the strands of fur poking at my nostrils. The smell of wet dog invaded my senses but it took me a second to coordinate myself enough to sit up.
Eros moved underneath me, having carefully balanced me for God knows how long. His steps crunched through the snowy landscape, the large field seeming endless around us. I wondered where we were, how long I'd been out. Had we been kicked out? From what I saw, it was only Eros and I, a black spot in the white plains.
"We are about half a day from the castle."
It was Rafe that had spoken, suddenly appearing by our side. He looked as rigid as always, but I sensed a bit more alarm in his voice than usual. That, in turn alarmed me. My slightly dulled senses perked a bit - and not in a good way.
"Castle? The castle?"
"Yes. Some of Alheera's people are there soon enough, laying in wait." Rafe finally looked at me. "Things are about to go down. The closer we come to the castle, the crazier things will get. How are you feeling?"
"Err, good. What am I supposed to do?"
"Not much. We'll put you in a safe place in the village surrounding the castle and we'll get you when it's all settled down."
"Alright. And Luke?"
"Him, too. He's going to be arriving soon, as well..." Rafe trailed off, then cleared his throat. "What you did at Alpha Alheera's... It was brave."
I paused but didn't have a chance to respond as Rafe was already gone.
We trotted on. The movements of Eros were like waves, and I found myself getting drowsy once more. The vast whiteness, the warmth underneath the leather jacket - the relief from the pain. I wondered if I was supposed to be more scared.
And then I fell into oblivion once more.
