Summer's Memories

The sound of cicadas were so loud in the Ao family's house, Yuan eventually started spacing out when he gave up on answering the paper Mr Ao prepared for him. His left hand busy waving his pencil to entertain his distraction

Yuan would join Ao ZiYu study session at her home. Them being neighbours and best friends add more points onto that. Yuan's parents also noticed that his academics are getting better ever since he started studying with ZiYu, so it's like a free tuition for him

His parents insisted to pay of course, but their parents had been best friends for years now, so Mr Ao declined their offer out of the good relationship they have

But it seems like Yuan's brain just stopped working for the past few weeks, all he wanted to do is just to play and fool around like a free soul. He is, indeed still a child himself but, as time goes, he also grows, just like you and me, day by day

And that thought just terrifies him so much that, he sometimes wish to just disappear the way he is, in this moment without walking forward, and just, have everything stay the way it is now. He thought he was being weird for feeling so, but the changes that's been unfolding before his eyes made him wander on what's gonna happen next in life

Is he really gonna be a businessman like his father, or a dentist like his mother? But such work are difficult, he knew he couldn't manage the fall of it. Plus, he likes to sing more. He has always felt the connection between him and the music he listens, or create

Yuan sighed and looked around ZiYu's and ZiYi's study room. It used to be their parent's office. Booksheleves on the walls and so his eyes landed on the wall beside the door. The stickers they planted on is still there, left untouched- aside from the chocolate stain from ZiYi. It's dry now, obviously throughout the years it's just left there

The memories of them sneakily placing the stickers were so clear in his head. The way they rushed into Mr Ao's office room with the free stickers they get from this chocolate they used to like so much as a child. How excited and cheeky they were feeling from doing something they're not supposed to do

Their parents can't scold or say anything to them either, they had so much fun that day. They're eventually knocked out before dinner time and woke up hungry the next day

He took ZiYu's free left hand, took one of his pen and drew a butterfly on her palm. The traces from the tip of the pencil made ZiYu almost pulled her hand away, but Yuan kept it still so the butterfly won't be messed up

''Uhm, what are you doing?'' ZiYu asked after Yuan finished. He didn't say anything back but kept staring on the butterfly he drew. The quick dry pen stayed still on the texture of ZiYu's skin

''Do you think we changed a lot?'' he spoke up, after hours of silence. They don't talk much during study hour, just so they won't lose focus. And Mr Ao is always listening

His question raised curiosity from her ''Well, I mean, yeah?''

''I don't wanna be 18'' Yuan admitted. ZiYu don't know what it is, but as soon as he said that, he looks so sad. His tone sounded like a sulky child that needs to return home after a long fun day at the playground

She wasn't prepared for his question, she just nonchalantly shrugged ''Well, you will be''

ZiYu is oblivious to the meaning behind his words. And that almost made him backing out from telling her everything

ZiYu waited for Yuan's respond, but he just kept quite and stare on the piece of paper placed on the table. The sound of the cicadas eventually fades away, and it suddenly sounded so quite and lonely.
