Prologue

The streets of D.C. weren't that kind to girls like me and my sister. Despite living in the most powerful place in the most powerful country in the world, we weren't afforded the same luxuries as those we elected to rule over us. As you ventured further out of the capitol, past the Washington Monument, the Mall and the White House, you saw people suffering in despair, their cries being unheard. Poverty affected all races, everybody. We knew where we stood and we did our best to navigate. We were a little bit different from the others. My dad worked for the Treasury and my mom worked for the State Department. They were good jobs, but not enough to live within the gilded gates. We also had family who had fallen victim to the war on drugs, whether it was jail time or to the pipe. It kept us in perspective. It never let us forget that we were black. Unapologetically so.

My sister, Angie, and I. We were grounded. We walked to and from school every day. Only time we had any reprieve, was when it was snowing. However, during the high heat of the summer, we were sweating our presses out as we walked down K Street towards our home. As we got older, our conversations began to change. We went from which Bratz dolls we wanted to which boys Angie liked nowadays. It was as if it was a new boy every week. It was starting to get hard to keep track. I wondered if I would ever be like Angie. She was two years older than me and absolutely stunning.

Angelica Robinson was brown skinned and built to the Gawds. She started blossoming when she was around my age. It was as if it happened overnight. Her hips rounded out, her breasts were large and bouncy and her ass began to barely fit her jeans. Through all of this, her waist remained tiny and flat. I saw the attention it got her. Some good but mostly bad. I watched as older men drooled over her, approaching her even. She sometimes found it amusing and would lead them on. Other times, she would just ignore them. Luckily, I walked with her sometimes, because if not, I don't know if she would make it home at times.

Me, I was about 5'3 and not showing anything. I was just skinny and kind of tall. I didn't know what to do with it. All I knew was that the boys didn't notice me. I didn't think they would ever notice me. We both wore our long brown curls, thanks to some Indian on our mom's side, in long braids that looked like ropes down our back. For the hot May day as we walked back home from school, I twisted mine up into a bun. As we rounded the corner towards our parents' brownstone, we walked past our neighbor Darryl's house. Angie then turned to me and smiled, her eyes darkening. That Cheshire cat smile. She was about to start talking shit. Again.

"So.... When are you guys going to finally do it?"

"Do what?" I asked.

"It... You know what I mean. You know he likes you. The way he stares at you." Angie teased.

"Whatever! You're the one with all the boys, Angie."

She laughed. "Men, honey." She said, "Darryl is a boy and perfect for you. The killing part is, you like him too. You guys should come off of it and be together."

I pushed her slightly and she laughed. "That's how I know."

Darryl was just my friend. That was it. That was all. I didn't know what look she was talking about. All we did all day was talk about videogames and comic books. I didn't really have too many people I could talk to about that. I just shook my head.
