Chapter 8
The next few weeks we just travelled, shopped and made love. While Blake was at work, he would leave me a stack of money to do what I wished. I wanted to go to the bank and just deposit it all, but I didn't want to seem suspicious. So I made sure to spend lavishly at the famous shopping destinations of each city we visited. When in Los Angeles, I made my home at the Cartier store on Rodeo Drive. After a week, we flew down to Miami. White sand beaches, clear turquoise water and beautiful, tan skin. Although it was all the Atlantic Ocean, the water, the atmosphere, everything was just better here. When Blake was away, I walked around South Beach, taking in the sights. Although it was going towards winter, the weather was a super warm 85 degrees. Up in DC, it was probably 50 degrees but felt like it was 45 because of wind-chill. Needless to say, I wasn't missing that.
Blake was always so extra, making sure that every whim I had was catered to. This must have been what it was like to be the queen of a country. It was all so overwhelming. However, down in Miami, Blake was more subdued, down to earth. He definitely treated me to nice things, such as tearing up the stores in South Beach; however, the way he spent time with me was different. In LA, it was one gala or party or meeting after the next, with each one requiring a different dress and a different conversation. It was proving to be exhausting.
Miami showed me a different side of Blake. A more human side, so to speak. He was always on whenever we were out. Wheeling and dealing, making moves. I wanted him to relax and Miami gave me that wish. He took me to Little Haiti and Little Havana, to the real Miami, not the touristy areas that you saw on the videos and in magazines. And of course, he knew everyone and everyone knew him. Each day brought us a different flavor of the city. In Little Haiti, we ate diri ak pwa wouj with griyot and French soda. When in little Havana we ate arroz con pollo. I never tasted such delicious food in my life. It was all so new to me. Growing up, we ate Jamaican food, but that was when my life was normal. Once we were dropped off to live at my aunt's house, we were lucky if we even ate.
He was fascinated with Black Cuban culture He would converse with the locals in their native language and save from looking at them, you wouldn't know who was talking to who. He sounded so natural. That day he took me to a priestess.
"What are we here for?" I asked, while looking at around the different statues and altars.
He winked at me. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
"You don't need any of this stuff to get me. I'm already yours."
He smiled at me. "Good to know. I just came in here to look around. I don't get too much off time where I can just enjoy myself. So now that I finished up my assignment for the week and I'm here with the most beautiful woman in the world, I thought to myself, sightsee, be a tourist for once." He took my hand and pulled me towards him. I melted.
We finished the day at a small family-owned Cuban restaurant, dining on ropa vieja and moro. The place was by the beach with a dancefloor that led directly to the sand. There was live band playing salsa and merengue music in the background. We watched the sky turn pink as the sun began to move to the west. I turned back to Blake and smiled. The night truly was perfect. I was beginning to think that I went through hell so that I could truly appreciate the heavens that were waiting for me. I knew to never take anything for granted and I was grateful for everything that was given to me. Blake stared at me with a slight grin on his face. He stood up and took my hand.
"Dance with me."
He pulled me up out of the chair and led me to the dance floor.
"I don't know how to dance salsa," I said, trying not to stumble. I was full of sangria and I was starting to feel the effects.
