Song: It'sRaining, It's Pouring – Anson Seabra

"Let's go home Novalynn, it looks like it's going to rain." Aracely told the little girl while lifting her off the swing and looking worriedly at the sky. The dark clouds came closer pretty fast and she wasn't sure if it would be just rain or a thunderstorm. It was already getting dark, but Novalynn had insisted on going to the playground and Aracely hadn't found the courage to say no. "Okayyy" Novalynn said and grabbed Aracely's hand.

"Uh, it's raining!" She squeaked all of a sudden. Aracely looked down at her confused and saw a raindrop run across her cheek. She quickly wiped it away with her thumb and already felt the rain on her own skin. "Do we run?" Novalynn asked as it was raining harder and harder. They walked through a small alley, it was dark and you could hear thunder not too far away. It all made Aracely really uncomfortable and when she looked at Novalynn who was walking beside her in the too big jacket that she had given the little girl, she clutched her hand even tighter. Aracely didn't like to walk in the dark, especially when it was in a situation like that where she just didn't feel safe. "We probably should..." She finally answered and they started to run. They stepped from one paddle into the next, the water splashing up their legs. Aracely's hair was already plastered to her face and her clothes were drenched. Suddenly Novalynn stopped so Aracely stopped too and squatted down next to her. "Are you okay?" she asked worriedly. "I'm scared... it's so dark and- and the thunder scares me." She said with a tearful voice. "Hey, hey it's okay Novalynn. You're safe. I'm with you." Aracely tried to calm her down and pulled her into a hug. She felt the little girl slightly relaxing in her arms. "Do you want me to carry you the rest of the way?" "Mhm" She agreed so Aracely stood up and took Novalynn with her placing her on her hip. "Ly?" Novalynn whispered sounding scared again. "What is it?"

"There is someone..." she answered. Aracely looked the direction Novalynn was looking and saw the silhouette of a tall man coming their way. He carried a big bag and he was about to take something out of it. He looked muscular and it made Aracely panic too. The man came closer and closer. He was fast. Aracely took a few steps back but the man only went faster. She was about to turn around and run but was stopped by the man's voice. "No need to be scared." Aracely knew this deep voice. She froze. "M- Mr. Stott?" "Yes, Aracely. I have an umbrella for you two." He spoke in his typical way of just revealing the most important information and not talking more than needed. He finally pulled the umbrella out of his gym bag and handed it to her. Aracely hesitantly grabbed it, her fingers brushing against his. They both stilled in their movement. "Who is he?" Novalynn's voice interrupted them and Aracely quickly pulled her hand away taking the umbrella. "Uhm he's my... my professor." She answered. "Hey smart girl, I'm Roy. Am I allowed to know your name too?" Aracely was stunned. She hadn't expected him to be so good with children. He was like a completely different person while he talked to her. His face and voice were soft. "My name is Novalynn" She answered and smiled at him. All the fear seemed to be forgotten and Aracely could sense that Novalynn already liked him. "Such a pretty name." Mr. Stott said smiling back at her. "Well, you can keep the umbrella just don't forget to use it." He looked down at the still closed umbrella in Aracely's hand with a raised eyebrow. "It was nice to meet you, Novalynn." He began to walk off and Aracely opened the umbrella. "Roy!" Novalynn suddenly called. He turned around and looked at them. "Can you walk home with us? I'm scared..." She asked. "Novalynn, you can't ask that." Aracely told her, embarrassed that she had asked her professor something like that. "It's okay, I can do that. That way I know that you two are safe after all." Aracely couldn't believe that he would actually want to walk with them. It was raining and storming. There was literally lightning over them in that moment. He should go home. "You really don't have to do this Novalynn's home isn't far from here." The statement hadn't accomplished what she had hoped for. Instead of looking convinced Mr. Stott looked confused. "Novalynn's home?" He asked and for a second Aracely was confused too. When she realised she couldn't help but laugh. "Oh, well Novalynn isn't my daughter. I'm her babysitter." She giggled. Mr. Stott's expression changed to something she couldn't identify. Was he relieved? Was he thinking about going home? "Let's go then." Aracely stood still and stared at him. Why was he doing this? Novalynn wiggled in her arms so she bent down and put her back on the ground. The girl immediately ran to Mr. Stott and grabbed his hand. He chuckled and enclosed her hand with his own. Aracely felt like her heart expanded. They looked really cute together. This huge man walking beside a tiny girl and bending a little bit down just so he could hold her hand. "Smart girl?" Aracely heard him talk to her. "Hm?" Novalynn answered and looked up at him. "Shouldn't we check where your babysitter is staying?" He asked while they slowed down. Only then Aracely noticed she was still standing on the same spot. Novalynn turned around and held out her free hand. "Come here Ly!" she called out and it made Aracely smile. Novalynn had copied her mom. Usually that was the way the girl was called by her mother. Aracely quickly caught up with them and grabbed Novalynn's hand. "Do you want to take the umbrella?" Aracely asked in Mr. Stott's direction feeling bad about using it for herself now that he walked with them. He cleared his throat but didn't answer and Aracely was pretty sure she knew why. She looked in his direction but she didn't meet his eyes yet so that's what she did. She lifted her gaze till her eyes met his. "Keep it. I'm already wet anyway." He answered. "I'm already wet too." Aracely said in an attempt to change his mind, but he looked slightly pained, shook his head and looked away. Aracely was confused and missed the blue of his eyes as soon as he had looked away. Another bolt of lightning streaked across the sky. "You know what? We shouldn't use the umbrella at all. It's not safe." Mr. Stott said looking worriedly at the sky.

"Good evening Miss, I'm Roy Stott, I know Aracely and I met them on their way home-" Mr. Stott introduced himself to Lauren, Novalynn's mom but he was interrupted by the little girl. "And then I asked him if he could walk with us and he said yes!" Novalynn told her mother excitedly. Lauren laughed and stroked through her daughter's hair. "That's really nice of you sir, thank you. I was actually a bit worried about them." She thanked him genuinely "Would you like to eat with us? I just finished making dinner and Novalynn's dad is going to be home late so we have enough for another person." "I can't accept that. I was happy to accompany them so there is nothing you need to thank me for." Mr. Stott replied. "Pleaaase? Please eat with us Roy!" Novalynn begged and clung to his leg. His expression softened and he peeked at Lauren before he hesitantly agreed.

"Lina, don't bite him!" Aracely told the baby that was biting Mr. Stott's index finger. Lina was Novalynn's little sister, she was 9 months old and now she sat on Aracely's lap, but she seemed to be more interested in Mr. Stott than in her babysitter. He sat next to her and was still eating just as everyone else. Except Aracely, she was distracted by Lina who didn't sit still because she was constantly reaching over to Mr. Stott. Aracely sighed and tried to pull the baby away from her professor. Their fingers touched and Aracely felt the comfortable warmth of his hands. She didn't want to pull away but Lina seemed to really torture his finger. "I'm so sorry sir." She apologized for the baby's behaviour. "Don't worry, it doesn't hurt." Mr. Stott said but right then Lina bit even harder. "Forget what I just said, it does hurt a little bit." He laughed and took his other hand to gently brush across Lina's cheek. The baby immediately let go of his finger and looked at him dreamily. "Can I take her?" Mr. Stott asked and directed the question at Aracely and Lauren. Lauren nodded but Aracely hesitated. She glanced at his plate, worried that he couldn't finish eating if he took the baby. "You didn't eat at all yet." Mr. Stott declared as if he had read her mind. Aracely was flattered that he had noticed it. She carefully lifted Lina from her own onto Mr. Stott's lap and watched them for a while. Lina made herself comfortable and Mr. Stott gently stroked her arms which made the baby slowly fall asleep.

As Lina seemed peaceful and content Aracely's professor looked at her and whispered: "You still didn't eat anything." It was all he said but it didn't sound like a statement, he made it sound like a demand for her to start eating. Aracely grabbed her fork and started eating and after Mr. Stott was sure she ate something he brought his attention back to the baby. "How does it come Aracely's your babysitter?" He asked Lauren, knowing that Aracely wouldn't be able to answer because of the food in her mouth. "Her mother was my best friend, I really need the help and Aracely needs the money and she is definitely made for this job so that's why I asked her to be our babysitter." Lauren explained and Aracely blushed at the compliment. "Can I ask why you aren't friends with her mother anymore" Mr. Stott asked carefully, but it was the topic Aracely had hoped wouldn't come up. Lauren looked at her hesitantly but decided to answer him. "Aracely's mother left them when Aracely was around Novalynn's age-" Aracely stood up abruptly. She couldn't handle it. Being reminded of her mother was one thing but Lauren talking about her especially in front of her professor wasn't just embarrassing, it was also too much. Too sad. Too humiliating. TOO MUCH! Without looking at them again, she stormed out of the room.
