After what seemed like hours upon hours of dissolving in each other, we came up for air with a gasp as if we'd been nearly drowned.
"Chan," I breathed, starstruck.
"Yeah, princess?" He stared at me with stars engraved in his eyes.
"You're a really good kisser."
And suddenly we both started bursting with laughter, but neither of us knew why. Maybe it was the surrealness of the moment, maybe it was that our lives had turned into a modern day Romeo and Juliet overnight, a secret, unrequited love, or maybe it was just nerves. But it was hilarious to our giddy selves.
After a few minutes when the laughter had died down, Chan said to me, "Okay, now I'm going to actually take you where I intended, not just the side of the road."
I chuckled and he started the car. The music started up again and perfectly set the mood. We drove along, while I fidgeted with my fingers and hair and secretly stealing glances at Chan. His eyes were concentrated on the road, his hands firm on the wheel. I turned to stare at the scenery that we drove past. The trees were blooming with fruit and the forests were alive with color, signaling that spring was here.
"We're here," Chan said after some minutes. He got out of the car and went around to open the door for me, offering his hand. I took it gratefully and blushed. His hand was warm and soft, the complete opposite of my cold and clammy hand. I turned around, telling myself to breathe, and only then did I take in the sights around me. Chan had brought me to a garden, with lush flower beds, lively birds, gravel paths, and a quartz fountain in the center, the water trickling steadily out of it. Butterflies flitted around, creating accents of blue and orange, a stark contrast to the large amounts of greenery. I ran to the fountain to touch the water, when I noticed there were koi inside it. My face erupted in a smile.
"Chan, this is beautiful!" I exclaimed, turning abruptly to face him. His face lit up with happiness.
"I'm glad you think so, this is my favorite place here to come when I need a place to think or be inspired." He extended his hand to me and I took it without hesitation. "Shall we?"
We walked around for a while, hand in hand, taking in the sights of all the unique flowers and getting to know each other. Chan was 24, moved here from Australia when he got through his audition at JYP, thought pineapple pizza was delicious (that was almost a dealbreaker), and his biggest insecurity was his nose.
"I hate my nose because it's so big." He paused. "You know what else is big?" he asked while looking down.
"Woah, woah slow down, buddy. We just met yesterday and we're in a garden so I'd rather wait until we were somewhere else some other time." I told him. He looked at me incredulously and then started bursting with laughter.
"I meant my feet, Ruby!" he said through laughs. I felt my cheeks turn a bright shade of red.
"Oh, yeah, those are pretty big, too," I mumbled.
"I'm a size 14," Chan boasted. I couldn't help but smile that he was so proud about his shoe size. "Now tell me about you."
"Me? I don't know, I'm really not that interesting."
"Then tell me the non-interesting stuff. I wanna get to know you even if it bores me to tears." He was so sweet, I wanted to cry. It was rare that anyone took such an interest in me.
"Okay, well since I was young, I always dreamed of being a singer. I've always loved it so I wanted to share my talent with the world but my parents didn't think I could do it. So now I just work at the front desk of a hotel. Uh, my middle name is Jane. Oh, and I live with my best friend Sasha, the one I went to the concert with last night." I looked down at my feet. "My life isn't that interesting." My life greatly paled in comparison to all his achievements. Here he was living his dream life and all I could manage to do was work in a hotel. I wanted to tell him the whole truth, why I was living with Sasha, but I was afraid the truth would scare him away. So instead I looked at him, how his body was so perfectly sculpted and toned, his skin so soft and buttery, the way his features blended together in perfect harmony like God was an artist.
"But at least it did just get a little interesting," I whispered with a hint of hope in my voice as I looked upward to Chan's face. His eyes were filled with need and curiosity, but not a hint of hesitation or nervousness. There were no butterflies in my stomach anymore, I wasn't afraid, so this time it was him that pulled me in. Our lips collided in harmony, his hands around my waist and my fingers in his hair. We smiled but our lips never moved away from each other. Although the air was heated, the kissing never once turned aggressive, it just stayed sweet and reminiscent of a first love.
After we pulled away, Chan grabbed my hand in his and looked me dead in the eye. "Ruby, I know we just met and me asking you this will come with many risks that I'm willing to take, but will you be my girlfriend?"
I smiled and answered the question with another kiss. Speaking of first loves, I guess he was mine.
