As I attempt to leave, he stirs in his sleep. Shit!
"Hey! Who are you? Why are you under my staircase?" he demands, shooting up from the bed and walking towards me. I shy away.
I wasn't planning on speaking to anyone ever again, so you could imagine my surprise when I realized I still had a working voice.
"Why the hell are you under my staircase?" the boy, Kellin as he said, asks.
"Well, I was here first so technically, its...my...stairs...?" I slap my forehead at how stupid I sound. My staircase?
"Dude don't slap yourself, calm down." he looks at me like I'm some mentally deranged, lost puppy. Well, I guess I sort of am.
"You're not answering me." He scolds. "Who are you, why were you under my staircase?"
"Uhm, Vic."
"Okay...Vic. Why were you under my fucking stairwell?" his voice's softness now has an undertone of annoyance. He's cute when he's mad. Stop Vic.
"I live there." I quickly blurt. His expression once again softens.
"Don't you have a home? A family? Anthing?" he quickly asks, and I shake my head.
"What happened?"
There is no way I am going to spill my son story out to some cute stranger in the cemetery. I pause, looking for a place I can exit from. Running towards the stairs, I dash out the door, avoiding further questioning. It suddenly starts training, melting the few patches of snow in my way.
"Wait!" He calls. I stop and spin around.
"I have your backpack, pretty boy." He laughs, dangling my backpack out the window for me to see.
My notebook slips out, landing on the ground with a splat into the sludge.
"Shit!" He yells, reaching at the sir in front of him. Suddenly, he disappears from the window, and I hear the front door slam.
Oh no, he doesn't.He grins at me from across the backyard, just as still as I am. The rain drops from his now soaking wet hair, as he shakes it, sending water flying in droplets everywhere dramatically. He smirks from underneath his fringe.
"On the count of three." He says. What does he think this is, a game?
"One, two, th-"
I sprint before he gets to three.
"Yo! Cheater!" He easily matches my pace, then snatches up the notebook as I dive at it, plummeting towards the soggy ground.
"Hey, not fair!" I whine.
"Says the cheater." He teases. "Guess you're not all mucho seriouso."
"Just give it back to me!" I scream, launching at him. He places his hand on my forehead, and with the other he holds away the notebook. I keep running despite the fact I can't move any closer to him.
"Nope." He drops me and dashes back into the house, letting me fall into the mud. Again.
That asshole.
