We get back to the resort just after dark and grab our things from our room.
"We gotta problem." Max informs us. "There's no way we're all going to fit in the two trucks. Too many people."
"Shit." We says in unison.
"Fuck!" Ari exclaims.
"The bus." I whisper, pointing behind us.
"Are you serious? The Sudanese tour bus?" Jake asks.
I smile and nod. "Start loading them up. I gotta grab something. I'll be right back." Ari says. I run off with him.
"What are you doing?" I ask, watching him take the shell numbers off the satisfied customers sign that has kept a tally of how many refugees we've brought back to Israel.
"Couldn't leave this behind." He whispers, pulling me into his side as we take a moment to look around the resort.
"I don't think I'll be able to thank Ethan enough for demanding I come on this assignment." I say as we walk back out to the bus. We sit right at the stairs.
"Let's go." He whispers. I look out the window as I watch the Red Sea Diving Resort fade into the black of the night.
"About eight more kilometers." Ari tells Rachel as he studies the map.
"What is this place?" Sammy calls up from the back of the bus.
"Carthago." I answer. "It's an old British airfield."
"If it's still there." Ari adds on the end.
"What if it's not still there?"
"Then we're fucked." I yell back. We make it to the airfield and Rachel busts down the gates keeping it locked up.
We come to a stop on the runway, and the 6 of us exit. The guys run along the sides of the strip, pulling out glow sticks to mark it for the pilot. "Hey, not to state the obvious, but there's a tree in the middle of the runway." Sammy yells. Jake manages to get the some lights on, after several attempts led to sparks flying.
"When are they supposed to be here?" Max asks over the radio.
"I don't know. Why?" Ari asks back.
"We have company. Nine kilometers away."
"Should we get them back on the trucks?" Rachel asks.
"No, there's still time." Ari says before handing me the radio. "Come on, Walton, you motherfucker."
"What do we do?" Sammy asks, coming over to us.
"Shit, come on." He tells us before taking off back to the others.
"We should get everyone back on the bus and get the fuck out of here." Rachel says.
"Ok, fine, get everybody back inside." Sammy orders.
"No wait, listen." Kabede says. "Listen." In the silence of the night I can hear the insects sing and something faint in the air, a rumbling. There, in the distance, is a plane coming in for a landing.
