She's just a girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Just a girl is how Kellin Roads seen herself. It's how everyone seen her, just a 16 year old girl, smart, single, pretty, I mean you'd think she would have the perfect life, right?
She dropped her black Jansport book bag on the hardwood kitchen floor against the cupboards under the counter tops. She was quiet, listening. Waiting hopefully for a snore or some indication that he was asleep. She crept through the wooden doorway. Her greenish blue eyes scanned the messy room and found a man asleep on the mint green couch several feet from her diagonally. Knowing she had to be quiet not to wake him up. She stayed as silent as possible and made her way back to the wooden cupboards and rummaged for something to eat. Kellin knew what it would mean to wake him up. She grabbed her bag and swept out the heavy back door she came into along with an apple in her hand.
As outgoing as you'd think Kellin ought to be, she was probably the quietest in her entire school. She liked to keep to herself. You would think maybe that's because of her mothers disappearance, but it didn't seem to bother her much anymore. At least that's what it seemed like. It did, however, bother her father. After Kellin turned 8, everyone woke up one Monday morning in the summer to find that Melanie Roads, her mother was nowhere to be found. Kellin's father fell into a great depression, and being a suspect of her possible death didn't help him. He shortly after turned to alcohol, and became a heavy drinker with a heavy habit. With each drink he took he became more and more violent, Kellin grow through the rest of her life abused by her father.
For Kellin, her 17th birthday was just around the corner. She got excited more and more as she thought about it, the smile escaped her lips as she walked through the forest like area behind her house. Leaning against a somewhat dead tree bent perfectly for climbing, stood Noel. a strawberry blond with short hair, bright green eyes, and a style of clothing that matched Kellin's in a sort. Which was skinny jeans, and a band tee. Kellin didn't have as many band tees, living with someone who won't let her get a job and won't even buy food half the time makes expensive things like this kind of impossible to have. Especially since sneaking out was becoming more and more difficult as her father is home all of the time now, due to quitting his job.
"You look happy." the voice exclaimed from slightly above her.
"Just thinking." Kellin replied.
It was quiet for a little bit. They breathed the fresh air flowing through the wind gently as it grew into a soft breeze.
"He wasn't up, was he?"
Kellin shook her head.
"Well, I got something for you." Noel said stepping down from the tree and faced Kellin. She pulled her hand from her back pocket and held something up, covering just her chin. Kellin focused and tried to read what she could see from the uncovered part above Noel's hand. She read "ORLD TOUR" and looked up in confusion. She didn't want to believe what she thought.
"You're coming with me to see you're two favorite bands live!" Noel yelled happily, trying to make Kellin even happier. She needs this. Noel thought. Kellin began to spazz out and you could tell she was screaming inside.
"So, are you going?" Noel asked with a face that had Come on, ya know you want too written all over it. Kellin didn't even have to think as a look saying "Are you crazy? YES!" spread across her face.
After some time they climbed a tree and sat near the very top. You could see over the rest of the trees and they watched the sun begin to set until they had decided to leave knowing Kellin would get in so much trouble for being out so late. Hugging each other bye, Kellin thanked her best friend again, and recited the time and place noel said to meet her before the concert. She walked out of the bushes and trees into her backyard making her way to the back door. The door sat open just a tad and Kellin swept through trying not to be noticeable. Quietly, her feet led her past the doorway to the living room where her father remained asleep on the reclined chair this time and up the stairs to her room. She dropped her bag on her bed and pulled out her iPod. Music was one of the only things saving her at this point, besides Noel. She tried not to think about things too much, knowing she would just end up crying herself to sleep. She turned the music up and fell back, plopping her head on her pillow and trying to forget everything for the rest of the night. She finally began to fall asleep after using the last bit of energy she felt she had to pull her black converse off her feet.
