Writers note:
I'm writing a scene from The Assassin and the underworld where Celaena meets Dorian for the first time. she doesn't know that it is him. in the scene Sam steps between them and I had an idea for a scene where he didn't so here it is.
PS: good reading <3
The clock struck three-three! How had so many hours passed? A glimmer of movement caught her eye by the towering doors atop the stairs. Four young men wearing masks stood atop the steps, surveying the crowd. It took all of two heartbeats for her to see that the dark-haired youth was their ringleader, and that the fine clothes and the masks they wore marked them as nobility. Probably nobles looking to escape a stuffy function and savor the delights of Rifthold.
The masked strangers swaggered down the steps, one of them keeping close to the dark-haired youth. That one had a sword, she noticed, and from his tensed shoulders, she could tell he wasn't entirely pleased to be here. But the lips of the ringleader parted in a grin as he stalked into the crowd. Gods above, even with the mask obscuring half of his features, he was handsome.
she danced as she watched him, and, as if he had somehow sensed her all this time, their eyes met from across the room. She gave him a smile then deliberately turned back toward the singers, her dancing a little more careful, a little more inviting. She found Sam frowning at her. She gave him a shrug.
it took the masked stranger a few minutes-and a knowing smile from her that she too knew exactly where he was-but soon she felt a hand slide around her waist.
"Some party," the stranger whispered in her ear, she twisted to see sapphire eyes gleaming at her. "Are you from Melisande?"
she swayed with the music. "Perhaps."
his smile grew. She itched to pull off the mask. Any young nobles who were out at this hour were certainly not here for innocent purposes. Still-who was say that she couldn't have some fun, too? "What's your name?" he asked above the roar of the music.
she leaned close. "My name is Wind," she whispered. "And Rain. And Bone and Dust. My name is a snippet of a half-remembered song."
he chuckled, a low, delightful sound. She was drunk, and Silly, and so full of the glory of being young and alive and in the capital of the world that she could hardly contain herself.
"I have no name," she purred. "I am whoever the keepers of my fate tell me to be."
he grasped her by the wrist, running a thumb along the sensitive skin underneath. "Then let me call you Mine for a dance or two."
She grinned, and then he dragged her by the hand, out upon the gigantic dancefloor.
It was more than two dances, they almost danced till the sun rose at dawn." My name is Dorian, now tell med yours?" he had asked while twirling her around once, her skirts had flowed and swished against the stone floored ground. perhaps it was because of the lateness of the hour or the Alcohol she had poured in her mouth earlier, but she said. "My name is Celaena and that is all you have to know." he had given her a smile that tugged up in the corners of his mouth, his sensual lips parting, about to speak, when his companion with the sword began uttering to him. "Dorian, it's Dawn we have to go back." "Oh, excuse my friend Celaena, he isn't so accustomed to manners when he is out in the city. this is Chael."
Dorians companion twirled around looked her directly in the eyes. His honey-brown eyes were warning her, don't you dare lay a hand on him. she just smirked in answer. the gold started blazing in his eyes, until they cracked to slits. staring her down, seeing the muscles on her arms, the arrogant smirk that plastered itself on top of her lips.
But then Dorian said. "Chael, she isn't evil you know, you can relax, take a break." the only thing Chael did was stepping between Celaena and Dorian his toned legs striding in between them making a wall. suddenly she felt a taught strong abdomen behind her. she twisted seeing Sam's curling hair, then she spit "take it easy Sam, were not having a brawl, i can control myself as long as he does." Dorian stared at her; she could feel his eyes burning into her back while she twisted back seeing his bemused expression. "Such a mouth, you know Chael is captain of the guard, and you think you can take him on, i'd like to see that actually." Dorian purred. she just picked at her nails and uttered "i could take on any man or woman in this house, and win." Sam whispered in her ear, "we don't want to start a fight do we Celaena." she just shrugged and gave him that grin she knew would make him see red. " I suppose we don't" she uttered. a snarl broke from deep within Chael's throat. "Who. are. you." she met his gaze keeping that grin plastered to her face, she then purred right back" you're worst Nightmare."
