Jenna felt the wind blow into the bakery as the last customer left for the night. She locked the front door and closed up the shop. Walking back into the kitchen, she saw Charlie putting the last things away.
"It's your night to close up." Charlie mentioned.
Jenna swallowed "Okay."
Charlie noticed her slight hesitation. "You'll be fine. Your car is right by the back door. All you have to do is turn off the lights, step outside, and lock the door."
Jenna knew that. She also needed to double check a few things. "I'll be fine."
Charlie took off his apron and dropped it over the coat hook. "Atta girl." He looked out the dark window. "I would double check the windows are closed too. This storm is awful."
Jenna shuddered. It sure was awful. "I will. Now you go home. Shoo."
Charlie grinned and left the bakery.
Jenna looked around the brightly lit kitchen. "At least the lights are on." She made her way back into the main bakery to check the windows were closed tight. The wind howled and rain pounded against the window. Jenna was going to let out a sigh of relief when she was home in her bed, safe and sound.
Thunder rumbled and lightning cracked, causing Jenna to jump. "Even though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."
More thunder. Jenna jumped higher.
So much for not being afraid, God.
Jenna secured the last window, and turned back toward the kitchen. She saw the time displayed on the oven. Seven-thirty p.m.
All of a sudden everything went dark.
~~~~~
Matt heard that the power had been going out in parts of the city, so he decided to go check the bakery on his way to Jenna's place.
Upon arrival, he noticed the place was unusually dark and Jenna's car was in the parking lot. With his heart racing he ran to the door and tried to get inside.
~~~~~
Jenna's heart was beating way too fast for its own good. She had sunk onto the floor and curled into a ball. She didn't know what to do. The lights weren't coming back on anytime soon and the storm was making her go crazy.
The doorknob rattled and Jenna whimpered. "Wh-who's there?"
The thunder let out an ear splitting boom and Jenna buried her head into her knees.
The back door burst open, letting in the sound and cold air of howling wind. "Hello? Anyone in here?"
Jenna recognized Matt's voice instantly. She wiped at the tears that were streaming down her cheeks.
The screams started again. Jenna let out yet another wail and Blake covered his ears. For five, painful minutes the recorded screams droned on. Once they had finished Jenna crumpled to the floor and let out sobs that a person should never let out. Even Blake seemed traumatized.
"Jenna!" Matt scrambled to her. He got on his knees and faced her. "Are you alright?"
Jenna shook her head. "N-no."
Matt moved to sit next to her against the counter. "Why are you here alone?"
"It was my day to close and the power went out." Jenna sniffed. She hated Matt seeing her like this, but she couldn't control her fear.
