Sirius' Birthday

Remus was woken by the sound of squeaking bed springs.

He groaned. It couldn't be much more than six, surely. And it was a Wednesday— meaning they had lessons. Hours away. They didn't start until nine, so really they didn't have to get up for an hour at least.

So why the everlasting fuck was some idiot jumping on his bed at six in the bloody morning?

"Shut up!" Remus yelled and stuffed his head under his pillow in the attempt to drown out the noise. It had no effect, only getting louder as the person seemed to start jumping louder.

"But Lupin, it's my birthday!" Came the voice of Sirius Black from the bed over. The squeaking got louder.

"Alright, happy birthday! Now could you knock it off?" Remus squeezed the pillow harder over his ears. The pillows at Hogwarts may be comfortable but to hell if they were in any way soundproof. Utterly useless. Remus thought maybe he should learn a charm to spell his curtains so no sound could get through it. Could be useful when you share a dorm with Sirius.

"Aw, Remussss did you not get your beauty sleep last night? You're an utter joy." The curtains were torn aside and Remus squinted through the crack between the pillow and the mattress as Sirius' grinning face appeared between the curtains.

"Piss offff," Remus groaned, imitating Sirius' tone. The full moon was tonight and he'd hardly gotten any sleep last night— the moon made him even more restless than usual. Around the moon, it was just hard to exist without anything hurting.

"Think you could be pleasant for just one day? A boy doesn't turn twelve every day, you know."

"Yeah, sure, just not this early in the morning."

Sirius pouted. He was good at that. Whenever he didn't get his way, it was straight to the pout. They teased him relentlessly for it, but he couldn't seem to turn it off.

"But it's—"

"Where's James, can't you go to him about this?" Remus asked, finally tossing the pillow aside and sitting up, rubbing the side of his face with the palm of his hand.

Somehow, Sirius took this as an invitation and climbed through the curtains, sitting cross legged at the end of the bed.

"Yeah, sure, come in," Remus grunted.

"James isn't here. Tosser's been gone since I've been awake. So. Here we are." Sirius grinned. Of course he was grinning. It was six in the fucking morning, but he was Sirius Black, and it was his fucking birthday, so of course, he was fucking grinning.

Remus could never.

Or maybe it was just the moon.

Yeah, probably the moon. He usually wasn't this testy.

He rubbed his face again, deciding to attempt to be nice. It was Sirius' birthday. Just because it was the full moon didn't mean he got to act like a prat.

"Okay," Remus said. "Okay. Er— doing anything fun? For... your birthday?"

Sirius snorted. "Mate, you know what I know. Maybe we'll do a prank or something. I don't know."

"Er— okay." Making small talk was hard, he thought. Better to avoid it. "Maybe we should find James?"

"Yeah," Sirius said. A flicker of emotion passed over his face for a second and he frowned. "Let's go wake up Peter and go try to find him."

"Good plan," Remus yawned, trying, trying to ignore the voice in his head telling him to push Sirius off his bed and just get more sleep.

"Okay. I'll wake Pete. You get dressed." Sirius slid off the bed and closed the curtains again.
