shuyang could vividly remember the guilty look on his boyfriends face as he walked into their shared apartment, hands behind his back and rocking on the balls of his feet. he remembered questioning the elder boy, mingrui only answering with the words 'please dont be mad'. after a few seconds of coaxing mingrui to tell him what was going on, he watched as mingruis hands came out from behind his back.

there, in the palms of the boys joined hands sat a toffee coloured bunny, big black eyes staring up at shuyang whose jaw dropped at the sight.

15 minutes he spent trying to explain to mingrui that he couldnt just bring a wild animal into their home, especially not a baby. though it seemed the elder was having none of it, insisting the mama rabbit left the poor thing behind.

"ive been watching her for days! no mom and no siblings were around! she was hiding under the chair in front of the building!" mingrui had whined, still holding the small animal up to his chest and gently running his index finger over its head. shuyang could only sigh, staring towards the sleeping bunny that had enchanted his sweet boyfriend.

eventually, just as he always did for mingrui, he gave in. agreeing to keep the small animal as long as mingrui first took it to a vetrinarian and got it checked over. he remembered mingrui wiggling in excitment, pulling shuyang to press grateful kisses all over the younger boys face, before pouring his attention back to his small friend. shuyang wasnt exactly ecstatic for their new roommate, but as long as mingrui was happy, he'd be alright.

the next day, mingrui insisted they skip their classes, urging shuyang to come with him to the clinic for the bunny. of course, there was no denying mingrui. they walked to the clinic, one of mingruis hands latched onto shuyangs, the other holding onto a makeshift animal carrier (which was really just a cardboard box with some shredded paper in the bottom, considering neither of them were prepared for a pet).

he sat in the waiting room while mingrui went in with the bunny, texting xinlong anxiously about his situation. the elder found it more funny that him, sending the boy some encouraging words and good luck, along with the message of 'your so weak for rui'. he watched mingrui excitedly step out of the room, the box containing the creature held close to him as he sat next to his boyfriend.

"shes a girl, i told you!" he whisper shouted, lightly bumping shoulders with shuyang who rolled his eyes playfully, the memory of their late night debate about the animals sex coming to mind. he admired mingruis giddy smile from his seat, as the elder gently pet the sleeping bunny. he leaned over seconds later, whispering into his boyfriends ear.

"you two look alike." shuyang giggled, mingrui giving him a less-than-impressed look. shuyang always had the habit of comparing his boyfriend to the little animals, he didnt want to pass up his chance. shuyang peered into the box, eyes tracing over the brown hair and long ears of the bunny. mingrui suddenly perked up, giving shuyang a smile as he grabbed ahold of the youngers hand and pressed his cheek to the boys shoulder.

"we should name her gougou." and of course, shuyang could never say no to mingrui.

mingrui was quick to welcome gougou as his and shuyangs child, the younger just a bit hesitant to the idea. they'd gone shopping for the supplies needed for a bunny, shuyang crying internally for his wallet. mingrui created a little corner in their bedroom just for gougou, setting up her large cage next to the wall.

shuyang couldnt even keep up with the hours they spent running after that damn bunny, making sure it didnt get under their bed or between their shelves, the boy was still exhausted after all the baby-proofing of their apartment. all the times he heard mingrui shouting the animals name from the other room, or hearing his boyfriends attempt to coherce gougou out from the areas she was forbidden from.

it was rewarding enough though, mingrui loved the presence of his new friend, and shuyang loved seeing mingruis smile when he played with the bunny. he remembered looking at the small animal, convinced he'd never understand mingruis infatuation with it. it was just a bunny, nothing that special about it.

but oh, was he wrong.

it started when he watched his giggly boyfriend bring gougou out whering a little pink harness with matching angel wings on the back. his heart melted at the sight. not the usual heart-melting whenever he saw mingrui, but a new nurturing type of heart-melting. his boyfriend left minutes later, gougou in tow as shuyang tipped his head back with a loving sigh, his little heart overflowing with a sickly sweet feeling.

then it was watching movies or playing games with the little animal sitting in his lap, reaching down every little while to stroke her head before going back to whatever activity he was doing. protectively combing her fur with the soft pet-brush mingrui had demanded they get for her ("she always needs to look good, like her dads."). playing with her, letting out quiet giggles whenever he watched her sprint around the room or jump around.

he found himself realizing that perhaps he did see why mingrui fell in love with her in the first place.

mingrui sat on their shared bed, gently petting gougous head when shuyang walked into the room. the boy had just finished getting himself ready for bed, smiling widely at the scene before him. mingrui waved shuyang towards their bed, who quickly complied and sat down next to his elder boyfriend. mingrui leaned his head against shuyangs shoulder, letting out a yawn as he moved to gently press a kiss against the other boys lips. shuyang smiled, pausing for a moment to process how ridiculous this was, in just over a months time his priorities becoming mingrui (like always), and now the little bunny who so easily stole boy boys hearts.

at least he'd always have a funny story to tell, about how he and his boyfriends first 'child' was a wild rabbit mingrui found in the front yard of their appartment building.
