Chapter 1

A hybrid and a misfit, that pretty much sums me up in five words. How pathetic. My father is an Angel and mom is Faerie. Basically I don't see a difference between the two races. They both have wings, and thats the only thing that matters to me, because I don't have any. On my depressed days, which happen more often lately, that really eats at me.

It doesn't help matters that the angels and fairies don't exactly get along with each other. Apparently mom and dad 'did it' when she was sent over to their Haven on official business carrying a message for the Top Dog, or should I say Top Angel. Archangel is probably the correct term, but who cares. I've heard he's been ruling over his fellow angels for the last half millennia, so that would make him an old geezer by now. Angel or not.

But back to my parents' story. Dad was one of the Top Dogs elite guards, newly employed in his position and a bit overzealous in patting mom down for security reasons. Turned out it turned dad on when mom couldn't stop scowling at him, which didn't happen often as most of the angel women fawned themselves all over him. He turned his tap of charms full out on mom and her resistance just fueled him on more. Eventually she succumbed to him for one night.

And there I came along three months later, the result of a one night stand, causing quite a stir among both races. I don't doubt how traumatic it must have been for mom, although I can't blame her for falling for dad. Angel's rank high up on the very hot radar. All those upper body muscles developed from their aerial habits. Yumm. They're like firefighters on steroids. Just more elegant.

Got to snap out of my Angel daydream and get back on track. So it turned out my parents only had that spark of passion for one night. When they meet again after my birth, they could barely stand each other. The fact that I was a wingless babe only added to the problem, because dad denied that I was his. Paternal tests and evidence that humans couldn't possibly develop completely and be born in three months cleared that up.

Then the custody battle started. At first I was permitted to stay with my mom among the fairies during the week and with my dad at the Haven on weekends. It turned out that the little angels weren't as angelic as they were assumed to be. Lets just say that I had a tough time adjusting among the hyper active bodies zooming all over the place and taunting me all the while.

The fairies were nicer. By nice I mean that although they gave me a tough time, they couldn't show off and fly all over the place. Wing development for flight started in their teen years. With them I at least had a chance to retaliate. I couldn't do anything to the angels, they just flew out of reach. The result was that I spent my formative years living with mom and the fairies. Dad occasionally showing up for birthdays.

Elbow on my thigh and head leaning on my fist, I exhaled out a heavy sigh. The morning air was crisp and cool against my skin. The sun's rays ware just peeking out above the tree tops on the horizon and birds' chirps happily filled the area. Soon the doves would peck up the bread crumbles I've strewn out on the grass before me. They would cheer me up.

When I was a little girl I stumbled across this clearing in the forest. I was crying and running away from my problems again. Laying in a heap after crying myself dry, I sat up hunched and enveloped my arms around my knees. Suddenly sunbeams streamed out of the heavy clouds, and with it a dove landed a few paces before me. Sitting still as a mouse, I willed it not to notice me. For surely when it did it would reject me just like everyone else. It did after all have wings, which I desired above all else.

Minutes dragged by, or so it seemed to me. The dove tilted its head, studying me curiously as if it could sense my loneliness. A few more landed next to the first one. They sat still for a while, but started waggling along on those thin legs, pecking into the grass and keeping a wary eye on me for any sudden movements.
