After two days of Justin and Jade complaining about flaws in the plan, Seth and falsified the necessary school records and enrolled them both in Creston High School, home of the Bats. On the ride to the school on what would be their first day, Jade and Justin silently sulked in the back seat until Damian dropped yet another bomb on them. “While you're here, the two of you are siblings, got it?”
“We're what?” Justin spat incredulously as once again Jade's jaw dropped.
“You heard him,” Seth replied, barely containing his amusement. “You can keep the same cover as before to anyone you already had contact with, but if anyone asks you're brother and sister.”
“That's ridiculous!” Jade exclaimed. “We don't even look alike.”
“Exactly,” Justin continued. “She had hazel eyes and I have brown ones. She has dark brown hair, I have dark blond. No one is going to believe this.”
“They will,” Damian smiled, clearly enjoying their reactions. “Because you, Crawford, are adopted. Which, as we all know, is not a complete lie even if we never made it legal.”
“Why do you hate me so much?” Justin asked, glaring at Damian and Seth.
“Who said we hated you?” Seth responded.
“You must hate me,” he insisted. “Because first you force me into high school, knowing I'll be bored out of my mind because I know all of the stuff already. Then you send me back as Jade's brother.”
“Not seeing your point,” Damian shrugged.
“Of course not,” Justin said, rolling his eyes. “Because you are her brother. You've never actually had to look at her in anyway that wasn't as your little sister. So here's a news flash for you; Jade is gorgeous. Which means plenty of guys are going to try and make a move on her and because I'm her 'brother' I can't do my part as her protective boyfriend.”
“Like I was going to let you,” Jade mumbled and Justin ignored it.
“You can still be protective, just as her brother,” Seth said.
“Not happening,” Justin replied.
“Justin, we don't have a choice,” Jade said and Justin turned on her in surprise.
“You're telling me you're okay with this?” Justin asked. “You're not going to be upset if girls start throwing themselves at me?”
“Wow, someone thinks highly of himself,” Damian laughed and Justin ignored him.
Jade thought about what Justin said, imagining the girls flirting with him incessantly, and she couldn't hide the anger that sprung up in her. Justin was hers and she didn't think she could watch anyone trying to make a move on him without her punching them. Justin was already smiling triumphantly when Jade spoke. “Justin's right, it's not happening.”
“Jade,” Seth started.
“No.”
“Yes, it is,” Damian replied. “Because in case you haven't noticed, we're working a job that targets teen couples. And not just any teen couples, but ones who are seemingly in a good place in their relationship. Which would make you two a likely target.”
