After Afton had killed the kids and disappeared for two years, the trauma of the whole psychotic situation, effected his memories and caused his brain to block them out. Being with Scott slowly brings them out, and sometimes it's as if they've always been there, but sometimes it hits him hard and the memory is like watching a scene in the third person and it's very disabling for him. Usually it leaves him in some sort of shock, and so that's why Afton seems so ditzy or dark or distracted in some chapters. Some are worse than others, for example, sometimes a name or a small memory will come to him and it's perfectly fine, but the bigger and more detrimental or important the memory, the more harm it does to his mental state!
So this is basically just a short chapter explaining that, because his loss of memory is very important to just about everything I write, it answers a lot of the questions ya'll might have about why Afton doesn't feel very much guilt or isn't a psychopath.
